QSC GX5 into a 300 watt cab... issues?

I just came from Guitar Center to get a "quote" for trade-ins on some equipment... I was taking in a QSC GX5, Line 6 Flextone 300 watt stereo cab and an Alesis SR-16. They low balled me (as expected) on all accounts... but what struck me as strange was they said the Flextone cab had something "wrong" with it... I've never had an issue with that cab whatsoever. They asked if I power the Flextone with the QSC and I said yes. They said that's what the problem was... am I missing something or should I call bullshit?

Here are the GX5 specs

8 ohms / 1 kHz (both channels driven) 500 W
8 ohms / 1 kHz (single channels driven) 600 W
4 ohms / 1 kHz (both channels driven) 700 W
4 ohms / 1 kHz (single channels driven) 850 W

I was driving the cab at 8ohm (as far as I could tell) so that would mean 500watts into a 300 watt cab... I've read in the past that it's better to over power a speaker than to under power it.

As I said, should I call bullshit?

You can't overpower a cab with only a watt "rating". You must actually use the juice and turn it up A LOT. So if you never ran it louder that you would with a typical amp, you haven't overpowered it.

Another thing to consider is that these 500 solid state watts aren't actually much more powerful than a 100w tube amp.

Thanks for chiming in... I have actually cranked it a bit and it's freaking loud... but the speakers have always held up... I've only ever cranked it for a couple of seconds because my entire body hurts with how loud it is with two stacked 4x12's... Live, most sound guys don't even let me get past 9 o'clock. I was just curious as to whether just connecting the two would hurt either/or...

Hey Mo - put it on craigslist or ebay. GC is just gonna rip you off.

What are you gonna get anyway? I'm thinking about buying a QSC K10 to try with the AXE to see how FRFR sounds.

What's going on Matt!!! I've been very busy buy and selling some stuff and it's all your fault!!!

When I went to your pad I heard what my amp can and should sound like so I decided to get some better gear... still can't afford (at least not without my wife kicking my ass) a Fryette 2/90/2... but I did get a Peavey PV-1500 which sounds a lot (at least with one practice and one big show of using it) better as far as I can tell... so today I was able to sell my QSC GX5 and I bought myself the matching Marshall 1960 cab... so now I have the 1960a and 1960b cab with G12T-75's in there... powered by my Axe-fx into the PV-1500 which is a Class AB power amp so it's much better than the Class H QSC GX5 power amp I had before. Now I want to get a Line 6 Relay G90 ($600 bones) and a Furman power conditioner to go in my other 6u rack. I also bought a Peavey PV215 for vocals... and hopefully the rest of the guys in the band can buy another one to get the matching pair. I'm gonna try to see how the Axe-fx sounds into the PV215 for FRFR... we'll see. Anyhow... hearing awesome gear (at your pad) first hand messed with my head because you don't know what you're missing until you "hear" what you're missing. It's an expensive bug!!!

P.S. Did I hear your right in saying that you sold your Mako?!?!?
