Queensryche: Yesterday and today

Queensryche w/DeGarmo; a concert memory I'll always treasure.

Up there with Pantera, Maiden, Dio and a few others.

Damn Chris Angel should hire the rhythm guitarist in the second video, he changes between black/white guitars so fast you can't even see it!

On a serious note of course they sounded much tighter in the first vid compared to now. And I love the earlier live sound where there's not that much gain used.... much better tone and note definition imo.

I Absolutely agree! An ex-bandmate of mine couldn't play without his cherished Bogner preamp distortion cranked into oblivion. Amateur...

Yea been there done that and too much distortion tends to compress things a bit too much.

I find myself these days using way less gain then I did in the past. Funny I used to think my jmp 2204 vertical input didn't have enough gain and now I feel like it's perfect for 80's stuff, but too much gain for classic rock! Oh well guess I might put my bogner on the chopping block for a v-plex or a plexi.

Back to the ot queensryche isn't the same without DeGarmo. I saw them live a few years back and mike stone absolutely butchered the solos. Wilton is spot on, but doesn't have the same feel when playing DeGarmo's solos/parts. Btw Wilton was using a Hughes & Kettner and sounded similar to the recent video in the op.

only saw them once.....the Empire tour and it was VERY GOOD!!
One of the best shows I have ever seen.

I saw the Operation Livecrime/empire concert....Degarmo/Wilton were amazing. Queensryche hasn't been the same to me since Degarmo left

I saw the Empire tour too....at Joe Louis arena. What a great show!

I've never understood the fascination with that song in particular. To me it is a sack of shit and super cheesy. Also for comparison sake, the first "old" vid is live footage with what sounds like voice over. Either way, it's pretty sad that this song is a greatest hit for them. Yikes.

Man, I remember hearing the song for the first time in abt around 1985 and thinking WTF is this?! Super high vocals, galloping, soaring guitars etc :). It sounded SO cool and new and well, in the lack of a better word, fresh.

But then again, what do I know, I grew up in a really small town near the Russian border in Finland in the 80s   .

Man I just had a flashback and thought I was on harmony central after reading that.

Anyway back to the band, anyone know if DeGarmo ever had an esp signature line of guitars? I always dug that warhol guitar with red, green and blue squares with tri-ryches on the body and neck...

I don't think De Garmo had an official sig line with ESP, but I seem to remember there were a couple of import sig models made. Might be mistaken though, may be the ESP pros on the forum will know better.

I was thinking the same thing. At the time it was awesome and in my books it still is! It's certainly better than anything I've ever come with.

Meh, you guys are stuck in the past!!! Time to go spin some more Power Slave or Piece of Mind... if I want the gallop and soaring vox, I know where to go!! ;)

^^^^ This guitar! Chris still has it. I saw him play about three years ago with Michael, Mike Inez on Bass and the current drummer from Heart. The four of them played at the Seattle Seahawks halftime show out on the field and Chris was playing this exact guitar. There was no singer they just did a medley jam to some QR songs, Ozzy, Van Halen etc. Was great to see Chris playing with Michael again.

They both were endorsed by ESP in the 80s/90s and Michael still as I took lessons with him for about 4 months back in 2006. Really nice and easy going guy not cocky at all. I often see him at shows around town hanging out when they are not on tour.

Maybe someday I'll happen to meet Chris around town.

Loved that album too!! I remember them saying it was the most "commercial" of albums to date for the band. Still kicks all sorts of ass though.

said it before and say it again...."El dorado" by Maiden is one of my all time favorite songs ever!
The gallop...the Chugging...and its got a modern heavy vibe. Love it!
