I was wondering if I could use the preamp out jack on my 5150 III to plug into my BOSS Micro BR Digital Recorder. The BOSS unit has 2 types of inputs:(This is from the manual) 1.GUITAR IN Jack (1/4") A high-impedance input jack for directly connecting your guitar or bass.
2.LINE IN/MIC Jack (Stereo mini type 1/8")This is an input jack for analog audio signals. The output of a portable audio player,
other audio device, or microphone can be connected to this jack.

This is from the 5150 III manual regarding the preamp out jack: PREAMP OUT—Connect to another amp’s EFFECTS RETURN or POWER AMP IN for simultaneous multiple amp use. This output may also be used to send the preamp’s signal direct to a mixer.

So could I use this preamp out jack to record into the BOSS unit? Would I use the 1/4" guitar in jack or would I need to get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and use the 1/8" Line In/ Mic jack to connect to the BOSS unit?

Thanks,
Todd

You can use the preamp-out into the BR, with the 1/4 jack, then in your effects menu, just disable preamps, and use a speaker sim if you want to go that route. I've tried it with other preamps, and it works.

Sweet! Thanks for the reply. Looking forward to trying it out tonight.

Try it into some of the speaker sims or cab emulations -and let us know how it works.

Didn't work worth crap. The BOSS unit gets signal but barely any at all. Not sure what's going on with the BOSS unit. I plugged my Audix i5 mic into and I can't get any signal from it at all either. I've checked every setting on the BOSS unit and I can hardly get any signal. WTF? It works fine just plugging my guitar in and using the amp models and effects and drum tracks.

I've got the input level cranked and still hardly any signal. Like I mentioned it works fine if I just plug my guitar directly in and use the BOSS amp models and fx. Plenty of signal. I have to turn down the input level so it doesn't clip. No luck still with the mic though. I read in the manual that it says when connection cables with resistors are used the volume level of equipment connected to the Guitar In or Line In/Mic jacks may be be low. If this happens use connection cables that do not contain resistors. This sounds like what the problem is.

Got it working. The mic cable they sold me had a balanced 1/4'' plug on the end which went into the 1/8'' adapter to go into the BOSS unit. The balanced tip was creating resistance hence the weak signal. Got another cable with an unbalanced jack and now have plenty of signal. Maybe now I can start posting some clips. :D
