I love the feel of my rosewood neck PRS Singlecut, but every pickup I've tried in it on high gain sounds like ass. Very muddy.

Anybody out there play high gain and find the secret pickup that can tame the influence of the RW neck?

What king of Pups are you trying? You get what you pay for. Try the WCR Godwook Darkburst combo!! Orgasmic to the ears!! :D ;)

When Rosewood necks get too dry (they need constant moisture) the tone goes to hell. Use lemon oil applied heavily and wipe off the excess with a washcloth. Leave this to sit for a few hours and repeat as necessary until the neck remains slightly moist after sitting for a few hours. This only needs to be done once a month, but it is necessary.

I play my PRS Modern Eagle (Braz Neck) with RP pickups through my Mesa DR's and TOV. I think it sounds pretty awesome.

BUT... Mine is very unique. It's the only ME with a 2Tek bridge. So that adds a lot of clarity and definition of the strings.

keep the neck oiled on a regular basis and i use emgs in my caparison, and love it,it balances out the walnut nicely

I've tried PRS 245 and Suhr DSH+ pickups. I use these in my mohag neck Singlecuts, and they sound really good. No mud at all.

I totally agree about the conditioning. I'm a big proponent of Fret Doctor, and I use it regularly (cleaned and conditioned at every string change). If anything, I err on the side of too often. About the only thing I can say for sure is that the neck and board are definitely well conditioned

IIRC some PRS guitars (yours may not be one) have a unique circuit that adds color to whatever pickup you may have in there. Darkens it a bit. If you remove whatever mods are doing this, caps I would assume, then your tone might clean itself up without the need for a new pickup. Also look to see if your pickup's hot lead is connected to the center lug of the pot or not. Tone is always spankier when hot is connected to the first lug and output is center lug.

EDIT: a skilled setup always helps too.

+1 Lemon oil is what I use too. Only a drop or 2 a couple times a year. If you put too much on it will get nasty with dirt over time. After I wipe the excess oil off, I seal the fretboard with furniture polish. I like pledge (lemon). Stay away from the generic "Dollar General" brand. Its nothing like Pledge and its nasty. I clean the board every string change with the pledge. Actually I hose down the entire guitar with pledge at every change.

Fret Doctor works a lot better than lemon oil.
True.

Most so-called lemon oil is only mineral oil with a lemon scent added, anyway.

If you want something cheaper than Fret Doctor, you can use Roche Thomas. It's what John Suhr seems to recommend. My bottle has been going on for years now. They also use lemon pledge on a towel to wipe down the neck and keep that "slick" feeling.

Does Fret Doctor last longer? The only gripe I have with the stuff that I use is that I feel that it wears off too quickly. Other than that it feels great and smells lovely

might as well try and get your tone pot/cap out of the circuit before giving up on your pup.

usually just clipping the cap to ground on the tone pot will clean things up.

i run an an Anderson H2+ with a wenge neck, but the wenge sounded good with every pup i've tried.

What are you using? Ive had a bottle of Old English Lemon Oil for probably 10 years now and its still going.

And second to this, sometimes using lower output pups actually sound better in higher gain structured amps.

Go figure.

Dunlop 65 Ultimate Lemon Oil. At first I thought that it might be one of those things that is just lemon scented, but it says on the bottle not to use it on maple fretboards so I figured it was actual lemon oil.

I think you might be on to something here. I'm going to try this. Thanks.

So far in my ME, I have had a RP, a Loller Imperial High-Wind, and a Anderson H3+, I think the Anderson was my fav out of the 3, but am going to try a Tremonti, which is a great pup in some other PRS stuff I have.
I'm not decided yet at this point

Rosewood NECK or Rosewood FINGERBOARD??

Les Paul do just fine with high gain stuff, and the Standards all have rosewood boards.
