Question for you Rosewood neck dudes

Fret Doctor rocks. I've never used Lemon Oil, but I was always under the impression that it was best used for cleaning fretboards, not conditioning/oiling, as it can lead to drying wood out due to the acidity if you leave it on. Anybody know for sure?

I love the feel of my rosewood neck PRS Singlecut, but every pickup I've tried in it on high gain sounds like ass. Very muddy.

Anybody out there play high gain and find the secret pickup that can tame the influence of the RW neck?

When Rosewood necks get too dry (they need constant moisture) the tone goes to hell. Use lemon oil applied heavily and wipe off the excess with a washcloth. Leave this to sit for a few hours and repeat as necessary until the neck remains slightly moist after sitting for a few hours. This only needs to be done once a month, but it is necessary.

Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia):

Here we have the most popular fingerboard wood! Indian Rosewood has the warm "rock-n-roll" tonality you’ve heard on many of the most famous rock albums in history. The warm tone is also a favorite amongst blues players. Rosewood contains natural oils so a finish is not required. The feel is also smooth and fast. Colors range from brown to dark purple to lighter purple with yellows and sometimes hues of orange and green.

I read somewhere that you can take a soft clean rag, and just rub the rosewood without any oils. When you rub it warm, the natural oils are released, and it is smooth again.

I`m sure there`s no problem with oiling them, but it does seem that it`s not necessary.

And as for cleaning fretboards:

PRS actually recommends Lemon Oil and furniture polish on their rosewood boards

Any more pickup suggestions to specifically address RW necks? Thanks.

I play my PRS Modern Eagle (Braz Neck) with RP pickups through my Mesa DR's and TOV. I think it sounds pretty awesome.

BUT... Mine is very unique. It's the only ME with a 2Tek bridge. So that adds a lot of clarity and definition of the strings.

Sounds interesting, any pics of that Animal ?

Only thing I can say is I had my best luck dealing with a guitar prone to mud is staying with a low out pickup or a very high out pickup (in hopes to take more of the wood out of the equation). I would just make sure the pickup is tight & doesn't add lows & low mids to heighten your problem. Even then you may still have to boost your amp. Not for the amps benefit, but to trim some mud from the guitar. I had a guitar once that I went through 5 pickup sets & it was still mud. Only way to get a good sound was to boost.

I might add, I've never noticed my ME being muddy at all  matter of fact, it dosent seem muddier than anything else I have, its just way more resonant, and rings like a grand piano   :D
Are you sure its not something else in your setup?

mmmmm...... very nice

Forget those fancy oils.

I use *gasp* Johnson's Unscented baby oil.

I pour a few drops every inch or two all the way up my fretboard, gently wipe it across all the rosewood with a soft cloth, let sit for about 20 minutes and then wipe with another soft clean cloth to remove the excess. If it still looks dry after another 30 minutes of air drying, I'll do it again.

I have probably done this, on average, about 3 times per year over the past 15 or more years with all of my rosewood board Strats with no ill effects. My boards are bee-yute-a-full and play like butta'!

You better believe it, buddy!
Does it have those baby shit green streaks on it?

Those are "character features", similar to what is so desirable about a birdseye board..... :D

Again, if it's a high gain environment, try a lower output pup.
