I got this pickup a few months back only because my old teacher had an Ibanez SLM that he liked for playing in pop cover bands.

I remember checking on YouTube and most demos of this pickup were either in a Polyphia-esque Math Rock context or a downtuned metal song. In some rare cases it's an instrumental shred song (which is nice)

So I thought I'd record a quick clip in a classic E standard thrash metal context instead.
This is basically zero post editing, just some high and low pass with the IR, no designer cuts and boosts, post-reverb or comp

Pros:
  • It's really thick in the low mids. If you're the sole guitarist, you will fill up the sonic space very well, and the bassist would still be audible
  • It has a single-coil-like presence that makes it cuts more than, say, an AT-1 or a Tone Zone
Cons:
  • It's really thick in the low mids. If you have another guitarist in the mix, you might muddy things up without a low cut
  • It's VERY compressed. Even more compressed than the Super 3, which is hotter. If you want PAF-like dynamics, play in parallel or look elsewhere.
