Quick question(s) about the Splawn Super Comp

I'm pretty new to Splawn, I've never played one and probably won't have the opportunity unless I buy it.

I was a huge fan of the JCM 800 2204 that I owned after I boosted it, and I'm also a fan of Laney Gh100Ls, I've owned a few and they rule. I would consider those amps in the same ballpark as the Splawn in that they are Marshallesque.

I am reading that the Splawn is tight like the JCM 800, but with the huge bottom end and saturated gain in the realm of the Laney

The particular splawn I'm looking at is a 2012 model supercomp with kt88 power section

I am looking to play metal in the same vein as Exodus, Overkill, Testament, things of that nature. it seems like the Nitro would be a good choice, and the supercomp will be fine for me since I'm not really in need of a clean channel.

Any suggestions? Thoughts on the Kt88 power section compared to the EL34?

I've been listening to those bands since they hit the scene; three killer fucking bands right there
I've not played a Nitro but recently picked up a QR drop B+, and I'd have to say it cops some wicked thrash tones and could easily bring the goods. I smack mine with the old Ts9 and its a thrashy & violent good time.

 great bands and awesome tones! Been on a huge thrash kick lately

But I'll check up on QR too, used Splawns go for a great price so it's hard for me to resist lol. Ever since I joined this forum I've been super interested in them due to all the great reviews on here, but tried to avoid catching the gas

Definitely check one out if you get the chance. I own or have owned Peavey, EVH, Engl, Diezel, Fryette, KSR, and recently Bogner, played many more and as of today I would keep the QR over all of them I think.

Looking up a ton of clips, both seem to sound great, seems like the QR might be more along what I'm looking for, but the Kt88 nitro/supercomp really sounds great, reminds me of the Framus Cobra but more I guess "full" sounding. Of course it's hard to tell through youtube lol. Might just take a chance on the best priced one of the two I can find

Either should be quite capable of getting those tones. I've got a Competition (50w single channel QuickRod) and it's just perfect for what I wanted it to do (modded Marshall, early thrash). If you buy used, you might be able to get most of your money back, too, if you flipped it. I forget who said it in another recent Splawn thread, but something to the effect of "new they're reasonably priced, used they're a steal." All I know is that mine is well built and sounds ungodly good!

They seem to be a little finicky with speakers... I've had the best luck with Greenbacks and (really unexpectedly) T75s (I loathe that speaker in *everything* I've ever played with it).

One other thing, they're a kind of unorthodox in how the tone controls are set. It reminds me of the Uber like that, but only to the extent that you have to set your tone using your ears and not your eyes. For instance, one of the best sounds I've found on my Splawn is with the treble turned all the way down to 0. I would've never tried that until I heard about it, and it sounds great!

Well I decided to take a chance, bought the super comp, it has kt88s and 100/50 watt capabilities, plexi style look and looks almost mint, priced right at 1k. I’ll definitely post my thoughts on it once I get it
