Getting ready to ship my Ultra Lead off on a trade with another Rigtalker for his CLX so I thought I'd make a short youtube clip to showcase what I believe up to this point in my amp hoarding career is the best brand of amplifiers for myself. Kind of freaked out that I'm trading my new and most recent "Holy Grail" amplifier away for the CLX which I've never actualy played in person (I might have to snag the UL in the classifieds and have em both side by side   )
This clip is the lead or red channel with gain at 2 o'clock, edge button in and boost off. Master volume at 3 o'clock and channel volume at 11 oclock...opened up pretty good, with some unwanted feedback in there, sitting too close to the amp most likely. cab is an off brand 4x12 with Chinese greenback reissues that sounds killer with this head.

Thought that sounded really good! It had some of that "wirey" top end going on that some Marshalls get with Greenbacks. And thank you for not recording it at mouse fart volume level.   Post up clips of the CLX when you get it.

Thanks man, the in the room sound was just incredible imo but the clip is not bad at all. I love this thing and I might just be crazy to get rid of it. That infamous Fryette string defintion and clarity is simply unreal, once you get addicted to that alone it gets harder to play your other amps. Killer percussive nature to the gain on this thing also, lots of amps have it but this has it big time. I bought this thing 4 months ago and didn't dig it a whole lot, checked the bias and one Kt88 was quite a bit out of whack with the other 3 and didn't bother retubing with the high cost of 88's so the amp sat for months, 6 weeks ago got a killer deal on some Sovtek Kt88's and biassed it up and it was a whole different beast. My other amps have just been collecting dust.

Send me that Bogner and I'll dust it off for ya. ;)

I'll rent it out to you for the cost off shipping and the low low price of $200 a month :D after 10 months of rent you can keep it

I actually thought the 101b was the "one" I'd finally found it and then this thing reared its ugly beastly head. It's a weird sickness for sure!

Haven't plugged the UL in yet extensively. I will by next week, once my other guitar player is totally finished tracking.

Glad to hear you are liking that 4x12! Sounds like a good match.

We had a UL at the MI ampfest a couple years ago and I (as well as some of the other guys) thought it was very underwhelming, actually my least favorite out of the bunch. Just really nasal and the gain left a lot to be desired. I always thought that was weird since I've loved every other VHT/Freyette product I've tried or owned, including the cabs.

To this day every time I hear someone gushing about their UL I always think they're high   but it's really making me believe there was something wrong with the one at the ampfest, maybe old tubes or a poorly matched cab/speaker combo.

With that said, your clip sounds really good and nothing at all like that one sounded  Good luck with the CLX, I hope you dig it and it's your new "holy grail"

Looking forward to receiving that puppy, I think this swap is going to work out really well because it sounds like the CLX might really be up your alley, and I know the UL is up mine.

Here is an old clip I did with my CLX and Fatbottom cab, tube screamer in the front, and basically as heavy as I could get out of it.

Hard to say but the UL at your ampfest could have very likely needed retubed and biassed, mine was night and day difference after I retubed. Although I could see people being underwhelmed playing it as opposed to just sitting back and listening to someone else play. If you are used to super liquid sustain and easy playing gain this thing feels totally different, you really have to dig in and hit it hard to get the most out of the gain. Guys who pick light and have a soft touch would hate it for sure. It does feel a little dry with very little compression, awesome dynamics...once you get used to this and realize it's a good thing and not necessarily a bad thing and learn how to bang on it to get the most out you really appreciate that and come to love it, at least I did. They are certainly not for everyone. With all that said I'm a complete gain monger and often dial up as much as I can get away with and I'm not even coming close to maxxing out the gain, don't even usually use the boost function on the lead channel.

Nice clip, Yeah I think you will like it and sounds like the UL will be tighter than you describe you'r CLX as being. Got it packed up last night and is being dropped off for shipping this afternoon.
