I'll probably be needing a buttload of short cables soon for hooking up the rack with everything, probably within 1' to 5'. Any suggestions on cables to get where it wont cost me too much and not suck?

Going to probably need more than 10

Basically hooking up

Rackmount Mark IV
Mesa 20/20
GCX Switcher

Never had a problem with ground loops, and I use their connectors.....but I only use George L's in the fx loop to connect my G Major and channel two of my Pro Rack G.

Hey buddy....

You get the Ultra, or were you able to find a Standard?

Dude - I have a ton of cables of a million different lengths from my old rack made with George L connectors that would work in your rack and I'd sell whatever you need to you for half of what you'd pay new. Figure out what you need and I'll grab the cables and lets do a deal! PM me!

I dislike George L cables for racks as you can create ground loops too easily if you use their connectors. Mogami and Canare are the industry standard.

I used GeorgeL cables throughout a ridiculously compex rack and never had even the slightest ground loop problem... In fact, I have no idea what you are talking about...

Thanks, looks like a good price

What do you recommend for connectors? I never made my own cables before, how hard is it to make your own cables?

If I was you, I'd use GeorgeL - the cables go together in a snap, no soldering... It'll work fine for your needs - you're not going on tour are ya? :)

The set screw means you MUST have a ground on each end of the cable. During certain setups (mainly star grounding), you simply cannot use them without invoking a ground loop. If you search HRI, you'll find a few topics that touch on it.

Once again, I don't know what this means. Give me an example of a setup... What is star grounding? All I know is I had a very complex rack w/two GCXs, tons of pedals, etc and it was beautiful. Not a ground loop in sight...

I did a fairly complex setup with multiple switchers, preamps, and line mixers all wired with some George L's. It was totally silent.

I'm not saying I like George L's, but there were no ground loops. I didn't have to do any star grounding b/c I didn't need to lift any grounds on any of the units.

Are you working for Dweezil Zappa or something?

What does the set screw have anything to do with this?

shield under jacket still establishes ground with the metal connector itself.

I think you're wrong.

Rack builders of the stars have used Mogami for years. Friedman has used George L's, but predominantly in conjunction with soldered ends. I believe Dave just wired up John Shank's rack with Lava Mini ELC cable.

Now, if I were a touring pro, I would certainly go with soldered ends. But since I'm not, my pedal board is outfitted with Evidence Monorail with George L solderless ends.

Star grounding is the process of having only ground throughout the entire rig. This will guarantee no ground loops, and a completely silent rig to boot. However, because of the way the George L connectors are designed, they will result in multiple grounds. This can cause noise issues. Many professional rack builders implement this method of grounding (Mark Snyder for example). If you wanna read more, go here:

when it comes to playing live, no one can tell the difference between various high end cables

as long as you use good cable, it doesn't matter which brand at the end of the day

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......I THINK I unnderstand what these guys are talking about with this star grounding but it is not making much sense as in overkill.

Earth ground is earth ground, as in your ground prong is grounded to your house ground as is everything else plugged in hense sometimes when the wife throws on the 1400watt hairdryer it will affect some audio stuff in the house. So these guys isolate everything in the rack and must be using nylon washers as well so that nothing is affecting the other ground wise.

Now the cables...................they are tip and ring right???? The sleeve is ground to prevent hum no???? When I design ground for an internet site or video hub there is one ground and we then tap off that main branch to feed each isle and each cab is grounded to that feed.

Not knocking this star design but maybe a little over the top no?? I have no clue.
