How many have tried the lower watt poweramps (like the Marshall or Mesa 20 watters)?
How do EL84 tubes sound in a rack setup?

There is no reason to use a low wattage power amp when using a Rack. Unless portability is an issue. Several of my friends use rack power amps( VHT Mesa 295 and always run the power amp volume dimmed and control the output volume with your effects unit. You get a good warm sound at any volume. In the rack world preamps create all your gain not power tube distortion. I used to have el 84 amps but prefer the tone of a 6l6 or the El34.

Little mesa
2:90

I know a guy who runs a Soldano X99 through a Mesa 20-20 and it sounds fantastic!

Like a poster said, lots of power doesn't mean automatically loud all the time in a rack.

I have a VHT 2150, and it sounds better than the HK power I had at ANY volume.

The HK had two quartets of EL84's.

It sounded good, but a little thin and underpowered. Do yourself a favor and get a big power amp.
