What's a decent middle of the road rack mount recording interface? I want nothing to do with Protools.

Presonus maybe?

I'm just a hack with very little to no experience with other MF's stuff but I'm very satisfied with my Firewire project interfaces. I also use Studio One and that's great too.

Give the Presonus Firestudio Project a try. I have the Firestudio Mobile and plan on getting the rackmount version soon.

If you don't like ProTools, the Presonus Studio One is a great. I use it and think it is very user friendly.

I've heard that about Presonus software. Will probably give this one a go.

MOTU 828
RME Fireface
Apogee ? I don't know much about them, seems like they discontinued their middle-of-the-line stuff ?

Seriously, if you have the money, just go with a RME Fireface 800... it's probably the best "home" interface you can get. I was speaking with a tech at McGill University Music School and he was saying it's what most people use around there. If you browse recording forums, you'll probably read the same opinion from many other people.

Focusrite Scarlett 18i20.
Outstanding! Got a demo unit sent to me to try and I love it! Mine will be here in a couple of weeks.

Can't wait!

:)

What about for multi-track recording like micing up a whole drum set?

Check out the tc studio konnekt 48 which is a great high quality interface with 4 solid pres, built in talkback, 8 line ins, adat in, speaker management, remote. So if you need more for that drum kit grab one of the many 8 channel mic pre adat units and you will have 12 mic pres plus 8 line ins. Most units have the first 4 ins as either mic or line but the tc has 4 pres plus 8 lines plus the adat. On top of the quality being very good you have a good deal of io options and control that way.

I use a Presonus Firestudio with my Mac. Works great and sounds clean.

If your using Mac,spend the extra dough and use Apogee products.

I'll sound like shit anyway. Might as well use the cheap stuff....

I have a presonus 1818VSL and I love it. Prior to that I used an m audio profire. But after getting a new computer with no firewire port, I got this usb 2.0 1818vsl.

I like the ease of using usb 2.0 vs. Firewire. The drivers on the 1818 have been rock solid and it sounds great.

That's probably what I am going to go with.

I know you asked for just an interface, but I thought I'd throw this into the mix for the hell of it if you're doing live recordings...JoeCo BBR1. It's a 24 trk stand alone recorder in a single rack space. I have a buddy that runs FOH on a cruise ship and he swears by it. Super stable and cross compatibility with all computer editors out there. It's the modern-day version of the older hard disk recorders but without the connectivity headaches. You don't need an interface with this unit.
