Hi guys, a friend of mine gave me a Rackmount DBX 266 Compressor gate. What would be the best way to used it, in the loop or in front at the beginning of the chain? I never used any sort of compressor while playing but curious to try.

Thanks for the advice.

I use mine in the loop of a Triaxis, which is only on the clean sounds. The rest of the rack effects are in series after the Triaxis. With a standard head, I would try to find a loop box and put it in the loop of the amp, but switchable independently of the delay/reverb effects. Again, I really like the sound on a clean tone, get that funky country snap, but I don't want that on a dirty channel.

Well, that one is made for line level sources, so it won´t work that well with your straight guitar signal. Having a compressor in the loop instead opf early in the chain is pretty rare these days, but it was a staple sound in the rigs back in the 80s and 90s.
