Sitting here at work doing some paperwork and watching/listening to "Live Between the Eyes" from 1982. Damn was Richie flat out awesome! I love his tone and style. Been on a Rainbow kick lately and can't seem to get enough. They are one of the bands that I never spent much time listening to when I was younger......never realized what I was missing.

Yeah, I love Richie and some of his live playing in the 80's was off the hook. One of the greatest all time in my book.

I would have to agree. The more I listen to his playing the more awed I am.

Same here. I like the Dio years with them the most though. R.B. is beyond good. Blows me away every time and like you, just in the last 5 years have I really gotten into them and wonder what I was thinking all these years passing them by..
The DIO years with just about any band are my favorite. Take Sabbath.....the Ozzy years are classic but RJD just brought it to a whole other level IMHO. The same can be said with Rainbow although I think Joe Lynn Turner definitely held his own in comparison.

Love RB Rainbow....obviously DIo is my favourite but love a lot of the JLT stuff. Ritchie is simply a master of the instrument, can't fault it....great stage performer too.

JLT ruined Rainbow for me. He's a great singer, but too much of a MTV poser for me.

No RJD=no Rainbow IMO.

Blackmore was definitely ON during this time frame, but the way RJD and Blackmore played off one another live was the key element to Rainbow for me. I saw them open for REO Speedwagon in the late 70's........I would consider that to be one of my religious experiences.

RB is awesome..don't care for JLT tho.

Check the playing at the 15:25 mark....love it

Very under rated band. Love the whole catalog.

And yes, Ronnie took Sabbath out of the one dimension for sure. H&H is one of my all time favs !
I couldn't agree more. I'm not taking anything away from the original foundations of Sabbath but RJD brought it to a whole different level. He was one of those magical rock and roll guys that just had "it."

There was nothing like Rainbow w/ Ronnie Dio. I saw Rainbow's first 2 US gigs, back to back, in Nov 1975. Again in '76, '78. then w/ Bonnett and w/ JLT.

The 1975 gigs were beyond awesome. UFO opened one of the dates. One show I was at the front of the stage. Blackmore was louder than hell.

this tour was the first concert I ever saw.Cobo Arena. Iron Maiden opened up on TNOTB tour! 38 Special also on the bill.

Rainbow and UFO on the same gig must have been beyond awesome! In keeping with the theme of my original post, UFO is another band that I am only now really beginning to appreciate after all those years of banging my head in the 80's. LOL!

How was his tone? It must have been ridiculous! It sounds pretty damn good on some of the You Tube videos so I can only imagine what it must have been like live..........cranked Marshalls!! :rawk:

Are your from the Detroit area? I grew up in the burbs. Cobo was a great venue for concerts.

Cranked Marshalls, Treble Booster, that German Phaser and the Reel to Reel for delay. It was insanely loud but awesome at the same time. Much like the old vids. The sound of Dio's vocals echoing thru the hall is something I remember to this day. Mind you, we only had the Blackmore's Rainbow album to go by. Nobody ever heard of Dio.

In '75 one show was at the Calderone, in Hempstead LI, and 2 days later we saw them at the Beacon Theater in NY. Recorded both shows as well. Argent opened one night, UFO the other.

Just found this. This is my recording! An encore at the Calderone , Hempstead, Long Island Nov 14 1975

Awesome!! The Golden Age of cranked Marshall bliss.

Great Show!!!!! First saw this on MTV back when they had "Saturday Night Concerts" and it was an "eye opener" for me regarding attitude when approaching my instrument.......I never played the same way again......The solo on Can't Happen Here is just wonderful IMO.....

Bill

The first show I really really wanted to go see was JLT era Rainbow with Riot and the Scorpions...my parents wouldn't let me go.... :(
