Randall MTS RM4 or Peavey 5150/6505

I know there is a fair bit of flexibility difference with the MTS gear compared to the Peavey but how do you compare sound wise?

It's mostly for mid-high gain usage.

Do the good MTS modules (quality sig modules or custom modded stuff etc) have the thickness and aggression of the 5150/6505+ amps?

I would be running the MTS (RM4) through a VHT 2/50/2 clone and a Orange CB cab with v30s
 
I think everyone knows I'm an MTS whore......but if all you want is the 5150 tone....buy a used 5150/6505, it might even be cheaper than an used RM4+modded module, given how plentiful the Peavey is.

The closest thing at the low end of the MTS price scale would be to grab a used UltraXL module and RM4 .. can probably be had for $525->$575...going up in range to a modded module, you're probably adding another $150 or more.

Value for money wise, I'd go with that used stock module before you start playing the modded game..can spend $100s for what is sometimes only a slight improvement...granted, some of those modifications also come with options / bells and whistles to fine tune or alter your tone.

My favorite high gainer is either the Salvation Dead plate, Angel or Gigmods Mark Series depending on the day :-)

I had the MTS Salvation S1S0 (5150 clone at around $400!!!) and flipped it quickly.....didn't like it...which either means a) I don't like 5150 tones, b) have bad taste or c) simply preferred one of the above 3...take your pick :-)

Yeah I think I'd be pretty GAS driven with the MTS stuff...it's kind of an attractive element as well!

For a grand (Aus) I can get a RM4 chassis and KH3 module...OR...a RM100 head including Scary, V, Ultra and Recto...

A 6505+ would prob cost me SH about $1350.

The RM100 is a bargain but I've heard they are extremely heavy and can be a little iffy with cold solder and other small issues. My poweramp should be an absolute rock (it's built like a tank - weighs like one as well) so the chassis is more tempting for my rack.

I like the 5150 tone but ultimately I just want a really cool, fat, aggressive high gain tone that is modern. I'm getting a Ceriatone Yeti for the vintage and mad HR Marshall stuff so this amp just needs to kick goals in the agro modern arena and its job would be done.
 
I guess that changes the economic picture a bit, Randall stuff has taken a beating in the USED market.....that RM100 seems like a sweet deal since Scary, V and Ultra are pretty great.....not a fan of stock Recto but you could flip it if you didn't like it or use it as a donor for a modded module :-)

Watchout for the potential moneypit though ;-)
 
The 5150 has a better feel for leads. Otherwise they both can sound great. A modded recto module or an ultra XL is probably were you want to be with the MTS.
 
Has anyone had issues with the RM100?

I've read that some were really problematic where the RM4 chassis has been pretty solid.

No idea but the RM100 is steal where the RM4 is just a good deal. I like the idea of the RM4 though as I can play it through (reamp) my 11R cab and mic sims for quiet practice. Not sure if you can do this with the RM100 without a dummy load (which I don't have).
 
There were fuse issues with the early ones. Im not sure about the silient recording with the RM100. Been a couple years since I had one.
 
You'd need a Hotplate or similar for the RM100.
RM4 into the 11r is a go. I did it for years except with an Axe-Fx.

To do silent recording with the RM100, just leave it on standby, and plug the FX send into your interface. Works like a charm. I do this frequently with my Egnater Mod50, which is of similar design.

That said, I'd go rack. I've got both a head and the M4 chassis, and I find having 4 modules a lot more fun.
 
My RM 50 blew up. My tech got sick of working on it - too many wimpy parts/connections. That said - the Brahma tone is AWESOME and I do miss it dearly. Playing 50 watt JVMs now.

Brahma w/ boost for flavor is tough to beat.
