Ok, so I was watching Def Leppard's Live In The Round video last night when I suddenly realized that Phil and Steve had some killer tones. I know that they both used Randall RG100 rackmount heads for that tour. SO I just wanted to ask is anyone had any experience with that unit? I don't plan on replacing my Triamp with it or anything, but if that can actually get the sound that was on the live video, then I wouldn't mind having one at all.

This is the tone that I'm refering to:

Thanks guys!

Juggernaut would be the guy to ask

I think he owned one not too long ago

here's one on ebay

It's the rg100ht, which is the rackmount version of the rg100es head. They are killer sounding solid state amps that kinda have a jcm800 voicing to them. Not really high gain though, so they kinda need a boost from an overdrive pedal or something.

They are very loud and cut like a tube amp too. By far the best solid state amp i've ever played.

loved mine.

very loud.

sounded gainier than a jcm 800.

great amps

Id keep an eye out for an rgp1000. Two independent preamps from the rg100es's + chorus and you can match it up with whatever power amp you want.

I thought the one I got from juggernaut was killer... I didnt keep it too long though.

I had one and wish I didn't sell it! It was a cool amp. It is VERY Marshally sounding. In the lower gain setting, it was VERY similar in tone and amount of gain to a single channel JCM800. It was also loud as heck!

You could pull out one of the knobs to access the higher gain settings (treble knob maybe?) The gain would increase, but the volume level dropped BIGTIME. It couldn't get that loud on the higher gain settings. It sounded better on the lower gain settings anyway.

the rgp1000 doesnt have that volume drop issue ;)

Randall has a add-on kit that addresses this issue. Its not very expensive, and gets most of the volume back. Its done externally if I remember right. Good sounding heads.

XP-3 block booster?

I've got one of the XP rg100es heads, which has that volume drop mod built in. Personally, i don't like the compression/treble pull circuit. takes all the punch out of the amp... i just boost with an overdrive pedal to get the gain i need. Sounds WAY better to me.
