there’s a local band who’s made these sound killer for over 20yrs, always liked their sound live

I’ve owned a few OG 5150’s which I’ve loved. Probably the amp I’ve played most now.

Been a recto guy for the past 5yrs or so but I’ve randomly been bitten to look at the 5150ii / 6505+ out of nowhere

Funny how this shit works hey

Bite back. And buy one. :D

Congrats! I miss my 5150-II, I should have kept but was younger and more stupid :ROFLMAO:

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve considered selling mine since it doesn’t have a boutique tax. I fire it up and then it delivers in spades and I turn it off with a new found respect for James Brown’s genius.

The gain structure isn’t as clean as a modded Marshall or Mesa mark series but where they shine is when you open them up. They don’t collapse in on themselves and get thin or smaller sounding, the gain actually opens up and cleans up when you crank on the master volume which is cool.

When I have mine cranked up to 4 that’s where it shows its worth and hangs tooth and nail with my other amps.

One thing they aren’t is forgiving. If your playing sucks ass you’re going to sound like ass through a 5150 II cranked up. They command good right hand technique as they track very fast. It’s not something that is mentioned often about them but likely one of their biggest benefits and why I love to use mine for practice over any other amp.

These are still kings of higain amps for gigging. Don't push gain past 4-5, crank it and they eat any modern butique amp for breakfest. Generic, boring, compressed as usual comments comes everytime but it is Your riffs and playing, not the amp 😆

Only played through one of the OG Peavey 5150s one time once - but remember being genuinely impressed. Has anyone her every owned one of the short-lived 6534+ models that Peavey released after breaking ties with Ed? I have to think they are not far off from the EVH 5150 III EL34 line.

mine is my only amp ive never really bonded with, but some of the best tones ive heard from other guys have been with them. its probably time i bust it out and try again

Peavey 5150II was my absolute go to amp when I was playing live, and I would 100% go back to it again for that circumstance. Reliable, simple to dial in, soundmen can work with them easily and they really cut through with the mids set around 11 o'clock to noon.

I bought & sold a few old 5150’s over the years. I finally found a reasonable deal on another one & this one is staying.

I've had 5150, 6505, and 6505+ and they are cool but definitely need volume to shine as stated above. Something unique about the midrange grind which is my favorite thing with those amps. And they just sound huge when you crank them. But I don't find them very fast tracking or near as articulate/unforgiving as many other amps. Boosted with an OD they tighten up nice but still have a little sag IMO. The overall tone and gain structure pales a bit compared to some other amps also.

Killer amps none the less, like really killer considering they're a fraction of the cost of the amps I gravitate towards.

i miss my 5150II . Toured all over America with those and the only thing that ever happened was the LED light was burned out lol . The amp never blew a tube ( I didn’t even change them ever ) and sounds consistent every night
