Randy Rhoads 44 years gone

Hard to believe it’s been 44 years since Randy’s passing. I hadn’t listened to Diary in probably 2 decades. Went back and was pleasantly surprised how fresh his playing sounded, even by today’s standards. So much color in every solo. That’s what inspired me to learn theory. I remember reading he used scales. That had me spending hours with my Doug Marks Metal Method In the Style of Randy Rhoads tab book/cassette and my Mel Bay scale book trying to figure out scales he was using. And somehow I was actually able to figure it out and teach myself theory with his solos - looking back that was a miracle lol What an awesome and inspiring player. Long Live RR!!

Since both those albums have been out, I'd say I've averaged listening them at least once a year. Times changed, tones changed, new favorites emerge but those two albums or better stated Randy, are always touchpoints for me. I love Blizzard but for whatever reason I always seem to reach for Diary first.

Rhoads changed me as a player, I went from being content being the rhythm player in my bands to not sharing guitar duties with another player for 25 years lol.

44 years, sometimes it seems like yesterday. RIP.
