Real Amp>DAW>Cab Impulses...Is this correct?

I'm running my 2204 into a speaker level DI, then into an attenuator as a load only. The DI feeds my DAW where I'm using Guitar Rig. My Guitar Rig patches have no Amp models or Distortion, just the cabs, mics & post effects. I think this is how impulses are used. I also think standalone impulses like Ownhammer and I know Celestion has some can also just be used as effects on the guitar tracks, right?
What I'm getting at is "I don't think I need anything other than a DAW to "host" these impulses" Is that correct?

You've got it right. I run an AMT P1 (preamp pedal) into my interface into Amplitube 4 with the amps disabled, just using the cab and a delay or whatever.

There are standalone IR loaders, like the Two Notes Wall of Sound III or Nadir (and a shit ton of others) that have some different features, like blending 2 or more cabs for a certain sound etc...and you can load other IRs into them, like the OHs and Celestions you mentioned.

But yeah, basically think of an IR as a speaker cab at the end of your recording chain or whatever.

Cool thing about doing this is you can record something, and then change IRs to suit your track...like if you were running a V30 IR and think something else would work better, you could change it after you'd already recorded it, and all it would change in your track is what the different 'cabs' would sound like.

I would replace Guitar Rig with a standalone IR loader. More features/options and less overhead in your DAW. I use LeCab, which is completely free. LePou's free amp sims are badass too. I use his Recto plugin a lot, along with the Thermionik stuff.

Right side of the page, scroll down a bit. You'll see his amp sim pack, and then LeCab under it. You can load up a bunch of cabs at once in LeCab, set different volumes and flip the phase all inside the plugin. Get the amp sims too!

There's plenty of other options as well, if you don't like LeCab for whatver reason. The problem with software is the UI design. You might love the feature set and the sounds, but if you don't get along with the menus it can be difficult to keep with it.

My PC has enough horsepower that GR doesn't bother it. I will look at LeCab, but I'd like to know if GR can host 3rd party impulses first.

From what I remember you can use 3rd party IRs, but you have to use Reflektor and it's not free....something like $100.

I'm running Reaper and I just found on their site that I can run IRs just as if they were reverb responses, so I can load them into ReaVerb...cool.

Interesting, I never knew that. I am going to try that.

IR reverbs are IR cabs are essentially the same thing. Same tech behind both. Any reverb plugin that allows you to load up IRs could be used for guitar cabs. Logic's Space Designer works just fine. You're not getting specific features designed for guitar cabs, but it gets the job done. Pretty cool

How have you been CaseyCor? Now that you are old enough to drink, maybe if you find yourself down the Edwardsville way, we can have a drink.

I'm alright man! I'm back in the area again. I'd love to head down there for a drink and maybe a jam sometime. Would be good to catch up.

I'm not supposed to be playing guitar or doing much of anything at the moment, so I'm here giving out gear advice as best I can   . Having some arm/wrist troubles. The new Zelda game isn't helping matters   .

Using Nadir now but will try the Rosen as it is free. I am also interested in their IR's vs. ownhammer (which I have) and the new Celestion. I think Rosen tend to be more processed and less raw and I think part of the fun is EQ'ing stuff the way you want it so I am not sure it is worth purchasing.

As for WOS, crashes my system like crazy. I run Mixbus 3
