Installed a g12k100, played around with it for a bit, but it sounded more boxy then my previous stock peavey speaker. It had better definition but Im not really liking the scooped or top end sizzle it has. For reference to the boxiness:

I think it sounds ok, but I want something bigger sounding like the stock speaker had:
(skip to 32 second, it ends at 1min 10 secs)
https://soundcloud.com/thoj900/mic-sm57-amp-test

I want something that kind of blends both those sounds. The g12k100 has too much high end sizzle for my taste (the recording doesnt really capture it), it's a bit too scooped (I had to turn the mids up a bit, probably why the boxiness is there). It has good definition but really suffers at lead tones because there is no punch.

The stock speaker has great bass response, it sounds way bigger but the top end is way too smooth and doesnt have much definition, it has better PRESENCE response with leads and riffs but the top end really isnt there. It doesnt cut through as well as the g12k100 though in the mids department, but again the g12k100 sounds too boxy.

I was eyeing the Eminence Governor v128, but im not sure. Also ive tried a vintage 30, too spikey for my taste, any reccomendations that kind of blends both examples above together? There is a drastic sound character change. This is for a 1x12, i dont have the funds right now to invest in a 2x12, maybe in the future.

Word has it from the professionals, around places that the
vintage30_main1.png
is the bomb!

By any chance, do you know why it's called a Vintage 30?

I have greenbacks with governors and together they sound great.

ive heard complaints about how the chinese v30 ones are worse or something, i have a chinese made one. Although i havent broken em in, is the tone change really that different when broken in? I was about to sell this v30 too

If your Vintage 30 is 8 ohm..........I'll swap you for a brand new Eminence V128!

how is the eminence on your side? good bass and mid presence? is their a high end fizz? does it sound big?

I got NO skin in this game as I think G12Ks are tits. Sorry I can't help.

They call V30s "30s" because it's 30cm. Furthermore:

From "The History Of Marshall":

The well known Vintage 30 was introduced in 1986 after protestations from Marshall's Steve Grinrod that "ceramic speakers did not sound as good as Alnico speakers." Steve continues the story:

"The Vintage 30 was not intended to be (nor is) a G12H30, but rather a modern-day Alnico, and was originally intended purely for the Studio 15 (4001). The price and availability of cobalt [Alnico = Aluminum, Nickel, Cobalt] in 1985/86 was outrageous as a consequence of the Cold War; hence the use of a ceramic magnet.

"We found that the "H" magnet came closer to Alnico in terms of measurable performance, and a new coil assembly was designed using modern materials having similar mass and physical properties to the Alnico 15 watt, but with a much higher flammmability rating; hence the Vintage 30's 70 watt power handling."

"Unfortunately, the original cone was not available, so we used the next nearest and added some quite severe doping. The result was a very fine loudspeaker, not quite but very close to the sound of an Alnico, with a fatter midrange. And since it's release date coincided with increased demand for classic loudspeakers such as the G12H30, it was marketed by Celestion as the "Vintage 30", which was where all the confusion came in."

You could try an Eminence Delta Pro. It has a similar flat eq like the k100, but has a little different flavor. I use one in a 1x12 and it sounds great. Be sure its the pro.

all i can find is the non pro ones, do they make em anymore?

Older Rola G12 80s...they are the most neutral of the Celestions which allow you to really use your amps EQ IMO...not the CL80...they usually have a few on ebay for 100 or less. They also stay more focused as they don't break up very easily...

i can only find 15ohm ones on ebay, my amp is 8 ohms. I guess the speaker doesnt have to be totally neutral, just something that kind of sounds like what i described above

Or you could go for the big dog..EVM12L..always wanted to try one myself and I hear they are pretty nice..and neutral..might work for you.

You could try a swamp thang, it's similar to the k100 but the top end is pulled back in comparison. Or my personal favorite - the evm12l.

You should definitely try Eminences. I have Legend 121 in my 112 cab and it rocks!

 I love this speaker for 1x12's
G12-65 might fit the bill too.

kind of off topic, but i might give this v30 another try. Is speaker break in a myth, or is it that your ears get broken in to the sound? Its brande new and i might try atleast for 1 month to break it in if its the case. Right now its very thin sounding.

For me it's not a myth, it sounds different after some time (people say after 50 hours or more). I bought brand new Fryette D412 cab and left it for my friend to play (I was using Ubercab at the time and he didn't have any cab), I came back after a month or so and I must say that it sounded different.
