The JJs sounded less aggressive and weak compared to the stock sovtek kt88,I liked the stock sovteks kt88 over the other brands hands down,I also use them in my VHT/Fryette deliverance D60H head and they sound very good, which are the stock tubes that come with that amp also,I want to try the sovtek 6550we tubes, the discribtion of the tubes from tube depot and the tube store sound interesting to me.

for Gold Lions i've tried the KT-77 and KT-66, they both have a modern pissed off and mean sound to them. guessing/hoping the 88's would also?

whatever Chinese KT-88 Elmwood uses for stock tubes is badass in a Deliverance, they have a great Marshally crunch to them. i've tried to get them in the States and gave up, think GT sells them? but as far Doug and other vendors, i haven't seen the same tube.

the Sovteks feel nice to play, and i beleave that Steve Fryette puts some thought into what tubes he uses.

I have a quad of SED =C= KT-88s in my Hydra and I fucking love it. I'm no expert on tubes, but I definitely prefer them to the EH EL34s I had.

They sound really open and dynamic with interesting overtones (though that's more the amp) and keeps things really articulate while being right fucking mean.

JJ's were to shrill and thin sounding and almost made a 3D amp turn 2D

That's weird, I had the exact opposite experience. JJ's brought life to my Hot Rod 50+ and my Ultra Lead.

I think it's just what you like to hear.
I too think that the rating on the tubes will have a big effect on the sound, as will the bias.
I've also had way too many quads of JJ's fail.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Some people love them, nothing wrong with that.

Yeah the bias thing definitely makes sense. If I was getting a thin sound out of them I'd be kicking them to the curb. As it stands my UL with JJ's sounds as big (maybe bigger) than my Herbert for the most part, minus the bottom end. I'm not pushing huge bottom with the JJ's. I should try the Sovtek's back in the UL for fun. I'll tell ya though, JJ's in power and Tung Sol's in pre was way too bitey. It worked for a while but was too much of a Marshall-like sound.
