Recommend me a 2nd amp!

I played Mesa stuff for about a decade, and went through a ton of them... Dual Recs, Mark IIc+, III, and V, Stilletto Deuce... Then for some random reason, switched guitars and amps to the evh brand... I now, have a USA Wolfgang, a Wolfgang custom, a bc rich mockingbird exotic along with a 5150 III 100w and 50w with their respective matching cabs...

I haven't been doing bands recently, since my daughter was born (she's 5 this year) now I'm in a band scenario, and would like to pick up a 2nd amp... For recording mostly...I play mid 90s sounding skate punk, bands like no use for a name, strung out, pennywise... Lots of muting, and fast... Not huge on fuzz... And no need for over the top gain... Need it mostly for straight rhythm tone.

Debating on going back to a mark series amp, or maybe an older 2 channel rec, or even a reborn... Something modern sounding and with 6L6s... Suggestions? Budget is $1500-1750 tops..

Any recommendations? It'll be used alongside the 5150iii in the studio.
 
yup mark or recto. didnt fletcher use a mark IV back in the day?? i know the guy from sick of it all used one. ive got a mark III, and its perfect for those tones

Pretty sure Fletcher uses Recto's but I could be wrong. I know the NOFX guys are Mark users.
 
Hefe in Nofx uses a mark III... Strung out has used rectos, they're using 5150 iiis these days... No use used a variety I know tony used Marshall's a lot, Dave Nassie used a recto in the band for most of his tenure but he's using 5150 III as well now (he's also my guitar teacher) ... I think a mark will be my next amp, I think it'll be a good match... Also means I need a new cabinet, as well... Not sure how the marks will sound with greenbacks, but we'll see...
 
mark v will be my next amp. it's between that and a kemper.

you should consider a kemper dude. for the money, it's just the way to go for amp lovers!
 
If it's for recording, definitely consider the Kemper. Although using one live would not be punk at all :D :D :D

I grew up on that stuff in the 90s, and when I starting to play in the mid 90s, always thought that was the "grail" tone :lol: :LOL: Don't get me wrong though, alot of those bands have some pretty neat tones. Fletcher/Pennywise still has GREAT fucking tone I think, has for about the last 17 years now or so probably. His tone live is pretty heavy. I still have never heard anyone get really close to that sound like on unknown road etc. I was always amazed by those guitar tones as a kid, it was just so different than anything I had ever heard. Anyways, Skate punk = Mesa, end of story. All of those guys have used a recto and/or mark series amp at one time or another. Fletcher was pretty partial to the mark IV in the late 90s to about the mid 2000s, and probably still is (either that, or a recto).


*Edit* Also, I read the latest pennywise stuff has been VHT/Fryette lately also, which makes sense, those amps can fit their sound pretty well in my opinion. Lagwagon for some reason I believe was using VHT/Fryette back in the day. Makes sense, all those bands are from out there in Cali, right where mesa and VHT/Fryette are located.

Then again, how much more punk can you get than giving the middle finger to the "norm" and using something completely different? ;)
