Hey guys, what kinda devices do you use or recommend for recording your guitar tones at home on your PC? Which USB interface would you recommend and which mic's do you prefer? I wanna start doing some recording (guitar only) at home and wanna get the best tones i can!

That's a wide open question and you will probably get many different answers. I prefer RME interfaces. They have a few USB interfaces depending on how many inputs and outputs you want. Take a look at the BabyFace or the Fireface UC. If you are on a Mac I would also look at Apogee, either the One or the Duet.

Take a look at Audacity or Reaper if you don't want to pay a lot for a DAW. On the Mac you can use Garage Band with decent results as well. At least starting out until you get some experience and can try out different DAWs. DAWs are interfaces are just like guitar amps, everyone has there favorite and nothing else compares.

Starting out mics you can't go wrong with a Shure SM57 or Senheiser e609 or e906.

That's very good advice.

If you feel like dropping a little more money, the AT 4081 is probably the best mic I've heard for mic'ing a high gain guitar cabinet to this point  , but it's $600. :dunno:

Thanks man......I'm currently using Audacity and currently on using a shure 57. I've used cuebase in the past and had success with that. I'm not looking to do nothing crazy, just looking to get a few awesome guitar tones here at home where I'm comfortable playing....in stead of having to play at the studio all the time. I'll check out those things you mentioned!

I use reaper cuz its cheap, but I have used cakewalk in the past for DAWs. I am currently using an EMU 0404 USB interface. It has 2 mic inputs, which is all I really need for guitar. For mics, Im running an sm57 and a nady kick drum mic (which I kind of like more than the 57) and I just blend the 2 together, 50/50. I get pretty decent results.

Like was said before, you will get varying opinions. What price range are you looking at? For me, I was looking for cheap. The 57, I bought new, the nady mic I got from a friend, the emu I got used. I splurged on cables. The whole setup for me cost about 400 bucks, but you can definitely go cheaper if you use cheaper cables, 1 mic, and a 1 unit interface. You could probably be all set for about 200 bucks new...

M-Audio ProFire 610 into a Mac based DAW.
Mics I use are Shure SM57 (for close) and Rode NT1000 (for ambient)

Software is "Studio" along with the M-Audio Mixer s/w that integrates nicely with Studio. All firewire into a 1 Terabyte firewire driven HDD. Analog as far in as I can go.

V.

57 is not the mic for low volume situations. Now when the rig is roaring it's prefect.

For low volume I'd suggest going with dual mic, one ribbon & one dynamic. CAD Trion 7000 with SM7B come to mind.

Interface - get the best you can afford, when the rest is taken care of.
