Recording gurus: Gobos or dedicated guitar "closet"?

So here's the question.. I have a moderate basement studio space that I have acoustically treated for monitoring and playing. Just behind where my DAW is, I have my drumkit and amp. I recently cleaned out a closet as it was my attention to play the amps at a good volume while recording. However, recent research seems to indicate that i would be better off tracking guitars in the room using Gobos to block outside sound sources rather than in the closet. I had planned to put 2 inch rigid roxul insulation panels in the closet as well but having a door and a roof would tend to throw more compression would it not? The boxiness is what i am aiming to avoid. Am I better off "tenting" with gobos and moving blankets over top like Lugo did when he first moved? The only advantage i see of a dedicated amp closet is volume. (which in itself where tubes are concerned, can be significant) Is it all in my head?

thought about that.. would be easy enough to build with MDF and stick under my desk but the boxiness... I listen to Pete Thorns clips and while they sound good, they have this weird phasing thing going on.. like a slight compression or the sound caving in on itself if that makes any sense. I'm not sure if it is his EQ'ing but pretty sure it is the size of the box.

If you have room to make the closet your iso-room, I'd go for it. Depends on the size of the closet though. I turned mine into one, but it is 5x 15 x 6, so it's good sized.

If you have a small closet, by the time you soundproof and treat it, there may not be any room left. For close mic-ing guitars, I don't feel the room has much to do with it. If you are getting a bunch of nasty reflections back into the mic, I could see that affecting things. At that point you could just throw a moving blanket over the cab to get rid of that.

Just reviving this thread for those that actually mic and get decent results in their closets.. the space I am working with is about 3' wide, 5' deep, 5 1/2 high - 7 feet slanted ceiling depending on whether i remove the shelf or not. I can build 4 inch bass traps for corners and 2 inch on sides and back of the door. I was going to do this vs. surround the 4 x 12 in my main room with gobos. The advantage of the closet is getting a 2 x 12 in there and cranking the amp or playing with mic placement when reamping. Help me decide!

Boxyness?

Are you sure it is room reflections?

I would try different type (ribbon, dynamic, condenser) mics, when close miking this has the biggest effect on honkyness.

Honkyness (not always in a bad way) is mostly resulting in using dynamic mics), try to eq out the mids there...

A very cool thing is reamping, get a good di and reampig box, especially when you recording alone, this make mic positioning or mic choice/shoot out a breeze or only possible this way.
You could also use a looper, delay pedal, always p+laying while you are adjusting mics to your taste.
