I'd like to record some "in the room" recording of amps. Any tips on where to put the mic to get best "catch" of sound? things like how far from amp/cabinet, how high, etc..

Thanks

One simple trick among many others : just listen with your ears in your room where it sounds best to you for what you intend to do. Then put an omni mic, or even better an ORTF or XY couple exactly where your head was. Done !

Also, these little guys do a remarkable job -

Don't know your setup, but 1 mic on center pulled back will get the room. 2 mics, 1 close and 1 anywhere else blended to taste works too. Put compression on the room mic so it's not overly boomy..

Anytime you're not close miking, then the room itself plays a significant role in the final recording. I know that sounds obvious - I mention it because now every situation is different, and what sounds 'good' is entirely dependent on the room itself. Distance / height etc. is impossible to answer, you'll just need to experiment to hear what pleases your ear in your room.

I'll add that if you want some punch and clarity but don't want to exclusively close mike, then a combo of a close and room mike (or pair) is a good way to go.
