Have you tried hitting the older Rectos with some different overdrive/distortion pedals? Not as a clean boost, but actually adding a bit of gain from them. I've had some great results using a Graphic EQ and some overdrive pedals for lead sounds. Try out the Fulltone OCD and the B.B. Preamp.
Tried it.
My issue isn't the lead channel, it's that I have to give up my clean channel. Currently I roll back on the volume and/or hit my pickup selector for cleans, but the results are not ideal.
Boosting the rhythm channel doesn't work that well for me either. I currently use channel 1 on vintage dialled in pretty fat for my leads, while channel 2 is on modern and thinned out (for a Recto) to make for a more aggressive rhythm sound. Boosting channel 2 just thins it out even further and doesn't produce the midrange density or squishy feel I get out of channel 1/vintage.

I have. I used to have a 2 channel pre 500 recto, and went to a roadster. The rhythm channel sound pretty close, but the pre 500 is a little more aggresive than the roadster. channel 3 is great for leads. Im trying to find time to record a good clip of my roadster for another member, but I don't have a lot of time to do it. when I get time ill post up the clip here too if you'd like
That's kind of what I'm worried about. I have a Rev F that's similar in that it has more aggressive mids and a lot less bottom than the Roadster I tried. Unfortunately, I've only ever used one in a store and I've never heard a Roadster in person with a live band, nor have I ever been able to turn one up to gig volumes to hear how it behaves in that context.
