Anyone previously used a 2 channel and moved to a Roadster?

Or vice versa?

In the past I played rhythm and 2 channels were enough (clean/heavy). Now I'm starting to do more lead work and I'm thinking of making the jump to a Roadster for the extra channels.

Not me, bro. I'm Triple Recto all the way and would never switch unless the amp company offered me some easy cash.

Then I would.

Have you tried hitting the older Rectos with some different overdrive/distortion pedals? Not as a clean boost, but actually adding a bit of gain from them. I've had some great results using a Graphic EQ and some overdrive pedals for lead sounds. Try out the Fulltone OCD and the B.B. Preamp.

I have. I used to have a 2 channel pre 500 recto, and went to a roadster. The rhythm channel sound pretty close, but the pre 500 is a little more aggresive than the roadster. channel 3 is great for leads. Im trying to find time to record a good clip of my roadster for another member, but I don't have a lot of time to do it. when I get time ill post up the clip here too if you'd like

Definitely! Would love to hear it.

I sent Japetus the link to this thread. He used to have a Roadster, and just bought a Single Rectifier this morning. He should be able to chime in here

Tried it.

My issue isn't the lead channel, it's that I have to give up my clean channel. Currently I roll back on the volume and/or hit my pickup selector for cleans, but the results are not ideal.

Boosting the rhythm channel doesn't work that well for me either. I currently use channel 1 on vintage dialled in pretty fat for my leads, while channel 2 is on modern and thinned out (for a Recto) to make for a more aggressive rhythm sound. Boosting channel 2 just thins it out even further and doesn't produce the midrange density or squishy feel I get out of channel 1/vintage.

That's kind of what I'm worried about. I have a Rev F that's similar in that it has more aggressive mids and a lot less bottom than the Roadster I tried. Unfortunately, I've only ever used one in a store and I've never heard a Roadster in person with a live band, nor have I ever been able to turn one up to gig volumes to hear how it behaves in that context.

I'd be more interested in any experience with how well it performs in a band (cut, bottom end mess, how it behaves when you can't turn it up as loud as you'd like... stuff like that).

I can get the roadster really aggresive though, and get a pretty nice mid heavy sound,

Have you tried hitting Channel 2 with a Graphic EQ? Could tweak the EQ for your lead sounds, freeing up Channel 1 for your cleans.

Channel 1 - Clean
Channel 2 - High Gain Rhythm
Channel 2 w/ EQ - Lead Sound

I haven't tried it, but I'll put some thought into it. The issue I see up front is that it doesn't get me around the vintage lead/modern rhythm thing. I don't know if you've used an older Dual but both channels have a very different feel to them. When setup right channel 1 feels like you're playing an elastic band whereas channel 2 feels like you're swinging a sledgehammer.

Oops, I read my word document wrong   I've got people's names and Usernames typed out in a .doc file since I can't remember them half the time

Lead tones are not the Rectos strong suit. Its tough to get something thick but not muddy and something that plays good. I can get a decent lead tone out of my Tverb with the amp on spongy and silicon rectifier. Add an OD808 and youre there. For leads I like the modern mode. Better highend. You just have to pump up the mids alot.

NAD.

Fuck yes! Put a black face on that Dual Rec, and that would be absolutely beautiful.

Very nice! Lets here some comparison clips!

Oddly enough, they both sound like Rectos.

That, and I still haven't gotten around to buying an SM57...
