Can anybody recommend a good place to get a GOOD refret on a Les Paul in the San Francisco Bay area? I've had my other LP done at Philtone in Maryland. And that turned out great. But it took a couple months and shipping and all that. Plus he's kinda swamped right now. So I'm looking local.

You want to go to Gary Brawer's shop in SF. He's an institution. Has two plek machines, regularly works on pro gear for guys like Metallica, Satriani, Shon, etc. Only real downside is that you may have to deal with long wait times because his shop is so busy.

SF guitarworks has a GREAT yelp. I usually go to Gary Brawer (as that's what I know), but i hear killer things about that shop. There's no shortage of footage/testimonials on them. Worth checking out. I'm sure they'll do you right, especially considering Gary Brawer's their real competition.

Holy carp, SF Guitarworks wanted more than $700 for a refret...

430 for fret job
+150 for stainless
+70 because LP has binding on fretboard (even though they aren't keeping the binding nibs)
+7 for nut
+30 for actually cutting the nut
+ 7 for strings
+ some other fees I can't remember.

Goddamn!!! I'd wait for Brawer. I recently had one of my Ibanez's refretted at G.B.'s. Once again my favorite guitar to play. All those extra fees... I mean, the SS frets are always an up-charge, I suppose, but 7 hundo. Shitty.
