Found a great preamp tube combo for that Kyuss sound....Thick, Dark, Fuzzy and Heavy is the best way to describe it, I have not found a sound that made me want to use channel 2 until now..mainly because I play fairly clean but already get that in channel one with my Cali76 into my Ethos into channel 1 but now I can say I really like channel 2 and have found a great beast of a sound, I actually pulled my footswitch off the shelf and hooked it up because I have a monster living in my amp and I want to unleash it on occasion.
V1 Tungsol-12ax7 the most musical tone full preamp tubes I have tried so far V1 because its critical to both channels I put it in V2 because it is also part of the clean channel which I run my Drive into though this set is based on no effects only the amps tone alone for a great Kyuss type sound in channel 2..pedals only make it better.
V2 Tungsol-12ax7
V3 GT-12ax7-R3 (EH12ax7)
V4 GT-12ax7-R3 (EH12ax7)
V5 GT-12ax7-R3 (EH12ax7) I put this in the V5 effects loop because its recommended for a darker reverb and I now run my Delay and Reverb thru it and it is a darker tone than other preamp tubes I have tried here..
V6 P.I. GT-ECC83-S (JJ ECC83-S) this tube has a mid heavy sound I didnt like in other postions but knowing it still affects the tone if only slightly I put it in the P.I. because it is said to be very sturdy and rate as one of the highest most consistent high gain tubes out there seems to work here pretty nice, not sure what it contributes but I didnt get this tone out of Channel 2 before I put it here...and I can say for the first time I find channel 2 useful for me, I dont like distortion unless its super thick, dark, fuzzy and heavy and with this combo it is all of those things.....when I put on my Cali76 compressor and kicked in my Retro Channel Fuzz pedal it got crazy..lol and it was already good before that...
Renegade's channel 2 (switch settings:18watt,Deep,bright) (Gain:Cranked all the way) (Bass,Middle,Treble at 12 O'clock) (Tube Mix: at 1 O'clock) (Volume: at 10 O'clock) (Reverb,Density,prescence,main2: all off) (Main 1 O'clock)
Not bad for cheap tubes, I like GT because they cover the gamut but mostly because they screen them before I get them, there are better tubes but the quality seems pretty good to me..I think they get a bad rap because they're a bulk buyer and rebrand other tubes with their label but if you look at the cross reference charts online you know what your getting....but the Tungsols are the most musical to me......Im gonna try some gold pin versions of all these I can get for comparison but I dont see myself buying NOS tubes....if I have to spend as much on the tubes as my amp Im just gonna buy a better amp.
For the record the Renegade is a killer amp for an unbelievable good price...dont listen to the haters they dont like anything.
