Rengade or Rebel 30?!?!?

I've set my sights on one or the other in the head version with the TM 2x12.

Are there any good reasons for choosing one over the other?

I probably won't be playing out so clean headroom wouldn't be an issue. I guess it comes down to the 84/34 and 6V/6L options.

Are the high gains tones pretty similar? I've looked at a lot of YouTube videos of the Renegade and love the flexibility of that , but couldn't find a lot of gainy stuff on the Rebel 30.

thanks,
fred

I've now owned both the Rebel 30 head and the Renegade head (both running through the TM212 cab). I started with the Rebel but returned it for the Renegade. The Rebel has a great clean channel but the overdrive channel (which I really need) just didn't do it for me. Even with the gain all the way up on the Rebel and a full on tube screamer I couldn't get enough gain for my taste. I initially bought the Rebel for the silent record option but found it to be unusable.

The Renegade is an awesome amp and way more tweakable and usable than the Rebel IMO. It has more of the gain that I was looking for, many more tonal options, a better footswitch, the ability to put pretty much any tube in it, external bias points, more wattage/headroom, presence and density (which make a big difference especially at lower volumes), the ability to have separate tube blend knobs on each channel, etc etc etc. I find it to be just a more mature and complex amp than the Rebel. By the time you factor in all of the extra features and the money that you would have to spend on another overdrive/distortion pedal for the Rebel, the Renegade's a no brainer!!! That's my 2 cents after having (and really experimenting with) both. Good luck

It all depends on what YOU are doing. If you're playing classic rock, blues, jazz, country, or a number of other clean/low gain/mid gain type music, then shit yeah, the Rebel 30 is an incredible head.

However, if you're playing mega high gain stuff, then don't be stupid and don't buy an EL84/6V6 equipped 30 watt amplifier. :loco:

I was in your shoes barely a month ago, all set to buy the Rebel 30. I played it in GC and liked it a lot. But then I played the Renegade through the TM 2x12 and that was all she wrote.

This is a clip of a project I'm currently working on -- it's a Fender Strat through a Renegade 65 into a Marshall 2x12 1936 cab. I use a Line6 M13 for fx using the four cable method, and I used two mics -- a Shure SM57 on the left and a Sennheiser 609 on the right.

The playing's kind of krap, but to my ears this is the best recorded tone I've ever gotten from any rig.

Well this really helps me... Thanks,

I was thinking of a Rebel 30 head/Cab for a Bedroom amp, But I found the same thing with the Rebel 30 combo as you... It had great tone and feel. BUT! Just not enough Gain! Even with Active pickups... If you have to start with pedals... You lose something... I just wanna go straight in, and KISS!

Thanks,

Roid

I had both as well and sent the Renegade back and now have the Rebel 30 head (as well as a 20). The Renegade is too big and heavy for my taste and though it does get a bit heavier in the overdrive mode, the 30 has a cleaner overdrive sound from my viewpoint. The Renegade sounded less distinct in the overdrive channel - borderline muddy and I played them both through some great Scumbacks and Tone Tubbys with no pedals or outboards of any kind. The recording options from the 30 are superior too in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the power switch and reverb controls being placed on the back of the 30 but I can live with them.

So, the bottom line for me is that I prefer the 30 and it's two hundred dollars less as well.

Thanks for all of the comments.

I went out today and came back with the Renegade and TM 2x12. I can't wait to fire it up.

Good! That's the combo that impressed me. If that had been available when I was buying I probably would have gotten it. I didn't think the Renegade combos sounded as good as what you got.

:D

Exactly. Just practice more instead and it won't matter what kind of speakers you use. ;)

Eric, Aren't those M series Scumbacks unreal?? I use the M55's in an oversize Germino 2/12 with a Tourmaster head....sounds ungodly amazing

Hey, new forum member here (1st post, and no, not a HCAF refugee, lol, been reading this board for years, just never registered).

I've been doing my homework for months now on the Renegade and Rebel heads...I've sampled all Egnater's stuff at my local GC except the 30 (grrr, where is it). I think they're all great in one way or another and provide ya with more bang for buck than most other new amps in that range ($). The cleans in particular are great compared to the new Fender stuff (in that price range) so why not, plus you get more amp with Marshally/Vox-ish crunch if you need it. So I "think" I've decided on the Rebel 30 Head as I am only interested in a studio amp for tracking Fenderish (6V6) CLEANS (crunch and munch is covered with my Q-Rod, which does have very good cleans, but still, EL34B's, heh) and word is the 30 head is KILLER through a 2x12 cab. I have the Egnater 212 cab but its being used with my Splawn head (an awesome pairing!).

I have a really sweet vintage Fender 2x12 cab (open back) and will use that with the Rebel head, basically giving me two distinct setups/rigs, the Q-Rod/Eggy cab for dinner, the Rebel 30/Fender cab for the sweets. I'm not interested in combos so that rules out a used Fender for cleans in the same price range (which relys on luck newayz ;-). Can anyone recomend an ideal speaker (for single spkr, close mic recording purposes) for use the Rebel 30 knowing it won't be used for dirt, just cleans? Or will the Elite 80 and its nice headroom do that trick? An added plus would be one that balances well with the Elite80 (but thats not really important).

Thanks!

Totally man. I love my M75s for sure!!! :)

I agree, the M75 is nice, vintage yet modern sounding if that makes sense.
