Looking to tryout some options in my Suhr Antique Classic (alder, maple/rosewood board). The output from the SSV is fine. I just find it too clear/even/hi fi.

Looking for something warmer perhaps with not as immediate an attack but still in the same vein regarding output.

Any suggestions?

DSV? will cut some of the high end making it less Hi Fi. Softer attack as well. Output should be about the same. Good luck.

Seems to me the dsv will only make things worse... sounds like you want the sound of an alnico two pickup with a lot of natural string vibration and some smear when you dig in heavily? I would try something from Seymour Duncan, maybe the slash pickup?

How do you figure DSV would make things worse? From the Suhr website "The DSV Bridge is a warmer version of our popular SSV humbucker. Equipped with a double row of screws, and slightly overwound for more output, the DSV offers increased sustain and a smoother top-end response".

High output and smooth would be too hi fi for me, to modern... but that's just me. It sounded like the op wanted something more vintage, maybe he will clarify...

DSV is pretty vintage sounding IMO, 9k output which is hardly very hot. I usually don't equate smooth and Hi Fi. But yes perhaps an A2 pickup might be more to his liking

yeah, 9k is not too bad really... I had the ssv for awhile to try it out, it didn't sound bad but I ended up selling it for a different paf style pickup. I thought maybe the dsv was 12 to 14k, my bad.

the dsv is very dynamic, john was putting it out for a reason over their with his hot ones.
its more responsive to the wood from the ssv, but you need to know how to dig those notes around it.

the APH2 are very cool PU from SD.
but they have some "special voice" to them that you must love or else its a pain in the As@

just my 0.2c

Thanks guys.

I have found John's low output hums to be too even for me. Very hifi. Almost to perfect in a way.

What I am looking for perhaps is something with a more tamed high end, lower mids and a decent but not overpowering bass.

Try changing the pots to 250k.
They'll change the character of your SSV to the tone you've described.
Much cheaper than a new pickup.

Thanks, guys. I am looking to stay away from the mass produced pickups. I've found the boutique ones that are hand wound/scatter wound work better for me. Any experience with a Godwood in an Alder body, s-style?

Ideally, I am looking for a hotter PAF vibe with the following:

More drive
Less highs
Less of a single coil vibe on the E/B strings
No pronounced vowel-like mids (example, NOT a PAF Pro)
Decent string to string clarity

I had an SSV+ (I know, it's slightly different) and just installed an SSH+ and love it. It's clear, tight, not a crispy chicken nugget and has good sustain. The guitar is an ebmm silo special (alder). I can't put it down once I start playing
