Resistor replacement question to Peter or anyone in the know

I've just taken my Herbert to a tech to have R42 replaced. He informs me he needs to take every knob/external thing off to get the whole board out as it's soldered from the other side, is this really the only way to do it properly? Seems a lot of work to replace one resistor.
 
I'd cut it, leave some wire and resolder the new.

I phoned Stapfer and he was awesome too, such a pleasure to talk to. Resistor = replaced now, haven't tried it yet as it's in parts awaiting a green powder coating, mwahahaaa...
