Hi guys.

As far as rhtythm playing gear for 80's HM (pedals and amp) what would you use?

And for leading play, would you just use an overdrive pedal on top? or would you change more things? or even the whole thing?

Just checking some opinions to see which are the different views on the subject!

Thanks a lot guys!

Cheers"

modded marshal variant and an OD pedal.

id use a mid boost EQ pedal for leads.

chorus in front delay in loop.

I think you'd be fine using the same core tone for high gain rhythm and lead. Maybe add some reverb and/or delay to the leads if you want. But I don't see much reason to really change up one for the other.

Of course if you're rhythm is a lower gain crunch and you want a searing/soaring high gain lead, you'll need to add overdrive somehow. That's more complicated and really depends on what you want. Personally I'd just use a JCM 800 for crunch and an OD pedal for leads, but there's lots of ways to do this.

I am using an ADA MP-1 for 80s stuff primarily but I also use some other gear here and there. I built an "80s" rack with old rack gear... An Art SGX 2000 for preamp and effects for example :)

Mostly this for me. I use a stock 2204,with a tubescreamer as my base tone, and I have a second boost and a chorus pedal up front as well. I like a "stringier" rhythm sound, so I use either the chorus or a soul food as a slightly darker boost to make it thicker for lead work.

Great methods already pointed out - all I would add is the idea of also using different guitars/pickups (if we're talking recording here in addition to live/band scenario's). I love using a nicely balanced (like say alder) humbucker loaded guitar for crunch rhythms, or maybe a single coil, snappy sounding guitar for cleans, etc, and then a totally different, more uniquely focused (in some subtle way) guitar for leads, like say basswood w/maple top, alder with top, mahogany with or without maple top, etc, etc (in addition to the amp, pedal, ambience ideas). Not that a single guitar, pedal and amp setup can't do you sonic justice - think of all the legends that made history with a single guitar + pedal + amp rig! Just adding some food for thought (...and the perfect built in 'wife excuse' for owning all the gear we do lol   )

2204 with FX loop. Frowny face EQ/boost pedal up front. Delay/chorus/boost in loop. Spandex/leather.

Doesn't matter what amp I'm playing thru. I use a Thorpy Gunshot for my lead tone.

What is it like? Can it do a TS type thing?

Never heard of this before. Just checked it out. Sounds pretty great on the vids, like there's some kind of depth to it.
