Hi Rivera Rock crusher recording owners

Just wanted to check with you regarding the controls.

So for a speaker cab connected to the rivera speaker output, with the attenuate knob set to "Studio" and the level set to "min"

- do you still hear the signal through the cab? i.e. does "min" equate to ZERO signal or its just the minimum level?

- is it safe to disconnect the cab (of course the rivera is set to ATTENUATE not BYPASS) despite this and use it as a load box?

Thanks!

I submitted this question to Rivera last year. According to Rivera, the RC can be used as a load box, regardless of the setting. I didn't bother going any further, and ended up selling it. I did use the RC to create some "preamp" profiles of my RK100, but I used a cabinet along with direct out.

My Guytron GT20 combo has a built-in attenuator with a 0% setting (100% load) specifically for direct recording/slaving to a secondary amp via XLR padded/phase select out. Maybe Rivera thought I had the newer re-amp model with EQ? Nothing beats a mic in front of a cabinet for recording to my ears. If you're intent on using an attenuator, you may want to consider going with a balanced out Weber Mass with a "load" setting.

SO basically what you are saying is that on the RC in STUDIO mode you noticed a sound coming from the cab despite setting the level to min?

I'm not concerned about the signal really but wanted to check if this is normal and if i can still use this as a load box with an XLR out going to an interface.

As long as you have a cab connected to the unit it will be receiving signal. It can be run without a cab connected like you say, straight to DAW and monitor the signal there.

Yes. Even on the lowest Studio setting, there was an audible signal. The way it was explained to me, is that the RC operates as a load box - regardless of the setting. Well, that's true, but only to a point... Per my experience, it's not possible to achieve 100% absorption using the RC.

Consider this... The signal at maximum Studio reduction mode is better than a 90% reduction... Is this not enough for direct recording? For setting bias and repairs, I would get an attenuator that features 100% (load) signal absorption.

Very interesting comments! :)

I guess the question then is - does the RC truly function as a "TRUE" load box without a speaker load connected to it all all times? AS in, if the speaker is not connected to the output with the LEVEL turned to MIN (in studio mode) there is still some leftover power which needs to be dissipated, right?

Is that safe for the amp (or RC for that matter) ?

I contacted Rivera about this a couple years ago, they said if a cab is plugged in it functions as an attenuator, if there's no cab it works as a load box, regardless of the settings.

jkkkjkhk's comment makes perfect sense, but that's not how Rivera explained it to me. I don't think I would have kept it, since I couldn't get a good sound with my AC30 attenuated.

You should write down your questions, and then contact Rivera... Come back and let us know what they said.

OK so heard back from Rivera.... nothing new to add to the above! Basically, there will be a slight signal from the output (amp dependent of course)..
