Rob Zombie on the grunge trend in the 90's...

So Kurt Cobain killed the industry and blabber mouth editors have poor grammar.

I agree with a lot of what's said here, but Rob's made plenty of stupid statement's about the industry before. For example, he said that record labels wont exist in a couple of years, 8 years ago

The nu-metal trend followed grunge and there was plenty of spectacle in that scene. The reason rock is not doing well in the US is that there are only a handful of bands putting out interesting and fresh new heavy music now - and some of those bands (e.g. Mastodon, Converge, Baroness, Gojira) are actually pretty old guys themselves at this point. There probably a lot of reasons for this situation, but Kurt Cobain isn't one of them.

I'm gonna chime in, since I work in the field.

Yup...he is right. To add, he does put a lot of thought into his shows, but they are highly sampled. I mean, he has more backing tracks than Steel Panther.

Also, I just think some people, especially ones that come to rap concerts are just followers, and see the rockstar rapper/oxymoron and think they have a chance in making it. Guys don't have to play anything, just get up there with a backing track. Seems like a shortcut to them.

Plus, I see the rap onlookers as suckers in a way. They seriously pay way more for tickets...like over $30+ for the same damn thing over and over again. And to top it off, the headliner E40/Too Short, whoever show up late and only perform for 30 minutes. I think to myself, there is NO WAY IN HELL the rock crowd would stand for those ticket prices and you only play a 30 minute set. NO WAY...They would freak out. But over and over again I see people pay for this BS. It's sad. The only one who really is solid is SNOOP. He at least does over an hour to 90 minutes. He gives the money's worth. But most do not.

Whenever I turn on the radio, most of what I hear(besides old bands) are bands with too many outdated influences. So many are trying to be Van Halen via Nickelback(if that even makes sense), all while singing about strippers and shots. The problem is, no one has put out anything that the current generation is able to identify with. Also, bands like Gojira and Mastodon aren't even close to anything that's marketable on a mass scale, regardless of whether they are good/fresh

Gojira probably not, but Mastodon could easily go "Black Album." Most of The Hunter is not too far from radio friendly. But anyway I agree with the "outdated influences" part. I'm just arguing with the idea that it was grunge that killed all the fun. Really people stopped giving a shit about grunge sometime around 1995, and the people that want spectacle in their rock and/or were part of the hair rock scene are still bitching about grunge like it happened last year. If it hadn't been grunge it would have been something else. People were just done with that scene at the time.

Yeah, Rob Zombie just resumed a complex issue in one sentence. Hip hop guys are popular because rock guys didn't want to be popular. How retarded is that

Now I wouldn't pay 2$ to attend a hip hop concert because I'm a sound/production fan and live sound is usually shit. + 95% of rappers can't replicate what they do on recordings for a full show, in the same way pop stars can't sing and dance a complex choreography simultaneously. But the imply rappers don't need any skills is, well, ignorant

I agree, but they haven't yet, and I'm not sure that they want to :) Agree with the rest here too

I'm a big rap/hiphop fan but I don't really feel like watching someone preform what is essentially karaoke, nor would I pay for it.

Well OK, I guess seeing Gang Starr with Primo doing live scratches would have been cool
Or someone who can really spit live like Rakim, with the DJ being active on stage

My first thought is Rob Zombie is full of shit. That's my second thought as well.

My first thought: I have no idea who those people are.
My second thought: I'm OK with that.

Powering up the iPod to rock out with some Sunset Strip era Hair Metal...

Last 3 albums I put on rotation on my playlist:
Muddy Waters
Freddie King
Big Daddy Kane

Some people are metalheads, some people are hip hop heads, I'm just a music head
Old, new, guitars, keyboards, sax, samplers... bring it on!

Just messin' with you - sort of

I can find something I love about all types of music, but I have to dig really hard when it comes to Rap, Hip-Hop, et. al. Hair Metal is firmly rooted in my wheelhouse, but I find enjoyment all over the map. Just last night I re-watched the Live From Dary's House episode with Fitz and the Tantrums. I make no apologies for that

I listened to AC/DC and 80's bands for all my teen years (metal, hard rock, some U2), hip hop was really hard for me to get into. I first got into synths listening to Depeche Mode, then Chromeo (another Daryl's house alumni) got me into picking up some hardware. Synths led me to drum machines, then to samplers, then turntables, etc.
That plus working in an environment where music is needed and hip hop is in high demand, which led me to search for the best possible hip hop. Ice Cube was much more tolerable than, say, Lil Wayne. Knowing how hip hop is done and getting more into rhythms (vs melody-based music) brought a new appreciation for the genre. It was a pretty long journey to get there, so I can see how people can dislike it. Plus, of course, the whole gangster/player/pimp/braggadocio image, which I'm not really a fan of. There's a place to start for everybody, whether it's more rock-oriented, soul, jazz, etc.

That's the beauty of music - there's something for everyone

Going back to the samples. I hope Robert Zombie is now doing vocal samples as well.

As far as "rock star" he's referring to the image.

That guy has several dollars, the company I work for holds one of his mortgage and he is paid.

he kinda has a point. but, for me, music doesn't always have to be a big production or all about image.

My first thought was who gives a shit what that moron thinks and that was my second thought as well.   I feel sorry for John 5 for having to play that shit just for a pay check..... total waste of his talent.

All of these say Rock and Roll, but only one looks quite rediculous. Of course, I am being selective about images to illustrate the point.

And for a finale....
