I tried a Rockerverb MKII recently that I liked quite a lot and was wondering how different in tone, if any, a Thunderverb is? Can't find any good clips of Thunderverbs's but obviously would prefer to play one in person.

I like some of the features on the thunderverb like the footswitchable attenuator which would be useful for live use, but overall the thunder seems like it is lacking a bit in gain on tap. I would rather have a little extra gain on tap that I don't use then to not have enough and or have to resort to a pedal. My rockerverb has a wide range of gain available and It has plenty of gain available and seems to have a bit more compression then the thunderverb. What I don't like is that the rocker can be bass heavy which is why I run it with the bass on like 1 or 2. The rockerverb can get heavier as it has an extra gain stage over the thunderverb. Thunderverb can get closer to the classic orange tones from the 70's also.

...and it seems that as long as the gain on the rockerverb is set below noon you can still get what I consider classic sounds out of it.

Yes, the gain knob has a wide range, from a slight crunch to full on.

The shape contour control on the Thunderverb kind of sucks.

That is one thing I loved about my Rockerverb 50Mk1, the gain knob range was awesome.

I liked the 100 watt Orange Rockerverb MKI. It has the 6v6's in the power section instead of the EL34's. Sounded really crunchy, and clear as far as distorted goes. I almost bought one.

I got to demo a TH30 vs. a Rockerverb MKI today and actually didn't care for either of them. I'll have to go try the R MKII I demoed at another place and see if it still sounds good on a different day. I agree the shape control on theTH30 was worthless. Either too scooped or too boxy, no good in-between. Also got to try a #4 and wasn't that impressed with that either. Thick and kind of soupy when the gain was up.

Yup

I still have the older mk1 rockerverb 50 that has 6v6 tubes, the mk2 rv was revised with el34 tubes. I actually prefer the overdrive channel better on the mk1, although the clean headroom isn't great with 6v6 but that's not a priority for me.
