I am a complete and total noob on how rack effects processors work, but I've always wanted to be able to use one, though all the digital menus, buttons, etc confuse me so I end up just settling for whatever stock programmed banks I can live with. I've been wanting to just get a few processors with just old school knobs for adjusting settings and then maybe have a ground pedal of some kind that'll turn on/off the various processors I'd have for a reverb, a delay, a chorus, or whatever. Some effects, like reverb, compressor and eq would probably always be left on, but I won't always need some sweet lush chorus, delay, flange or phase. I was watching a video from Leon Todd today showing off a GP8, and another guys video, and today was the first time those digital menus halfway made sense to me. It looks like on this particular model (and probably most others if I just bothered to spend the time) I can program in, say for example, 5 banks of sounds I'd use live. Here is a hypothetical setup I have in mind so I can explain what I'm asking:
Bank 1: compressor-for my basic sound, using the amp's drive with an overdrive pedal in the signal chain
Bank 2: compressor, phaser-for songs or parts where I may need a lil phase action
Bank 3: compressor, digital delay 1
Bank 4: compressor, digital delay 2-hey, some songs are going to need different delay sounds than others
Bank 5: compressor, digital chorus
And there may be more banks where some have delay and chorus on as well, who knows...
So in my hypothetical world, I set up how many ever banks I want, or that the machine will store, and just use a ground pedal of some kind that'll switch between banks so, depending on the song, I could switch from bank 2 for one sound, and on the fly switch to bank 5 for a whole other sound. The way my brain is processing this is by setting up banks with programmed effects in it, and the parameters of those sounds adjusted how I want them, it's almost like having a whole bunch of stomp boxes I can instantly turn on or off at once, but in a single rack unit rather than having to buy a compressor pedal, a delay pedal, a phaser pedal, etc.
Am I understanding this correctly? I've had other effects processors in the past and they defeated me before I ever even got into trying to learn them. I had an Alesis Quadraverb, I've got a DOD 256DSP right now as well as a Yamaha Rev7. I'd also like to use my Rev 7 in this hypothetical setup as well because it has reverb (the GP8 doesn't), a parametric eq (though I may still get a TC Electronic 1140 that'll only handle the eq), and that sweet symphonic chorus Zakk used, as Miracle Man is gonna be in my setlist.
