The Peavey VTM 120 was one of the best sounding budget amplifiers of its time, but went virtually unnoticed by the music community. I believe Marshall sued Peavey over the design, and so it was discontinued. Ronnie never used pedals, so this is straight into the amp tone.

Wow. That sounds GREAT! And with Peavey cabs too. Does anyone know for sure if they were stock speakers or did he swap for Celestions or something else ?

Ronnie used greenbacks and JBL's (or EV) with his Marshall rig. I assume he used the same with his PV rig, but I'm not sure. I know his tone had not changed much, if any.

The first band bar band I ever saw (thanks to a fake ID) was Romeo in '79. To this day, I have never heard anyone play Van Halen as well as Ronnie Garvin, and Greg sounded better than DLR himself! They landed a record deal, and changed their name to Stranger. Ronnie said it was because of Romeo Void.

Here's some info...

Thanks for that. I'm going to look up some more Stranger info and you tube videos. Great player...too bad he shot himself. Real bummer.

that's who I thought of first, too lol

swamp woman made me think montrose. I could never get that tone out of my old vtm but then again I'm a terrible guitar player.

The band was everything to Ronnie. The band broke-up, problems with his marriage, excessive drinking... Guess it was more than he could handle. He was one of the best players I've ever seen, and he is most certainly missed.

RIP Ronnie. :salute:

I don't know anything about this, but I saw on another forum that someone said the VTMs were just props, and that the real tone was a stock Marshall with no pedals or anything. The person that wrote it said he knew Ronnie's tech...again, I don't know about it, not saying it's true, just pointing it out for discussion purposes...

Ronnie did play through the VTM rig. I looked at this rig many times, and I never saw his Marshall tucked-away in the rears. That's not to say it wasn't there... I preferred his Marshall rig over the Peavey, but his tone wasn't drastically different to my ears. Ronnie was a HUGE influence on my playing for sure. He was also a fellow Michael Schenker fan!

He was a great player and had some tone for sure. I was in the Bay Area when this happened and went to the memorial benefit. It was a great turn out.

Saw Stranger open for UFO on the Mechanics tour. I was impressed to say the least and bought the record on vinyl. Great great live player.Didn't know he had passed. Really a shame.

I just came across this. I'll set a couple things straight for future reference. Ronnie used early 80s EVM 12Ls in the cabinets. I had his number 1 cabinet for years after he passed.

Marshalls in the early days. then into the Peavey stuff in the late 80s onward. 50' "Lifeline" cables to roll off highs. 59 Strat with a custom bar..but stock bridge.

Dimarzios in the early days and on the 1st album. A JB was used by the late 80s as well...and may be the last pickup but not 100% sure.

He did use the VTMs live...they were not props. EVMs were loaded into the Peavey cabinets. wired to 8 ohms. That makes a big difference right there.

no pedals...occasionally a wah was patched in for a certain song and then promptly pulled out.

How do I know? I knew Ronnie all throughout his Stranger days, and after that I became guitarist with Greg Billings...Stranger lead vocalist. We still perform around Florida and play a lot of the old tunes. Ronnie is missed by the fans. If you were lucky enough to see them in the 80s...you KNOW. He was fantastic.
