I have an M4 on order but am considering doubling up and having two M4s in my rack and having the lovely option of 8 modules to ply with
Which is the most sensible way of switching between the two M4s and the units within - including routing the signal from the guitar
I have a Tonebone loopbone which looks like it will guide the audio

My signal will probably go
guitar>AB box or Tonebone Looper>first M4 or second M4>TC M1 delay/reverb>Optional BBE sonic maximiser>Power amp

Control the module changes by midi and switch between the units by Looper?

Here is a link to a 20 channel Egnater setup. This one is accomplished using Axess Electonics GRX4 MIDI switcher/router.

I've been wanting to get an M4 or 2 and do the same thing you are thinking about except drive it all from my MOD100s power section. With the GXR4 I think you could also switch boosts in and out of the signal change with MIDI as well.

Yes, you will need a buffer of some and potentially a switcher of some sort on the output end. I suggest keeping the switcher out of the input side if you can avoid it to keep that delicate signal pure. I have learned this the hard way with an M4 and ie4 rig a few years back. They all have some sort of degrading effect - even the Switchblade and upgraded GCX. I know that many people really like the Axxess buffer, but I have read about problems with the the Tonebone over at HRI. Good luck. ;)

For preamp switchers you can also look at psionic audio, they make a preamp switcher, and I think you can use the sound sculpture ABCdabra to do that too.

Yeah I kind of wanted two different flavour M4s
First would have T/d, Bassman, COD and Erect showing a Fender flavour (at least in origin)
the second would have SL, SL2, EG3/4 and EG5 thus having a more Marshall /Egnater flavour if you get the drift

Looking at the kit that I have - I do have A rocktron Patchmate and a Line mixer as well

If I wasn't worried about switching from any module to any other - for example jut jamming at home /workshop or letting people try out guitars with any given sound then it really wont need to be complex.
I guess it would be fun to have every option available without signal loss/degredation - especially at guitar shows where players could lose themselves somewhat in all the tonal options . 16 different sounds might be too much for many though

Use the Rocktron switcher post preamp and before power amp(s)
Get a decent Buffer for input to two preamps from guitar.
