Long post incoming….
Last night, I got to see Sammy Boller in concert in Brooklyn, nyc. I am so glad that I took the 2 hour drive. Sammy is an incredibly gifted guitar player and songwriter to say the least. Over the years, I’ve seen so many of my favorite guitar players in concert including my heroes Steve Vai, Nuno Bettencourt, Andy Timmons, John Petrucci, Neal Schon, the list goes on and on. The one thing that I saw last night that impressed me the most was the fire that he has when he plays. Imagine Randy Rhoads meets Eddie Van Halen amped up to 10. That’s what I saw and heard. It was truly an inspiring display of guitar technicality, feel and tone! I need to get me a Friedman BE-100!!! I’ve been going to concerts for over half my life and I’ve never seen this kind of fire on stage before…(maybe with Vai… yeah… most definitely with Vai).
Not only did Sammy play songs off of his debut cd, Kingdom of the Sun, the musicians from his band Pharaohs are in his solo band so they played a bunch of songs from their soon to be released debut cd.
One of the highlights of the evening was getting there early enough to speak to Sammy for about 20 minutes. We talked about gear, musical history, and even possibly taking a guitar lesson or two in the future. He was very gracious and signed by Guitar that I brought with me.
At the end of the show I said goodbye and he went back to his rig and grabbed me a bunch of guitar picks. Such a humble and inviting person. He even kept apologizing to me numerous times that the show was running late and that he knew I had a long drive back to New Jersey. Who does that? He really didn’t have to do that but it was really thoughtful of him.
I’m looking forward to his continued success with his solo career and Pharaohs! If you haven’t checked his music out, you should. Here is some live music of his…
