I went to a concert to see Kansas last night and apparently I was clueless on how amazing their catalog was because their songs were almost prog like, a lot of time changes and great tones, etc.

If you ever get a chance, give them a listen. Good stuff!

Seen them doing a first album tour.
Jaw dropping.

So, who was left in the band?
I know Phil Ehart still drums

The singer has been there a bit apparently but I think mostly newer guys. The one guitarist was officially a member as of last night. He was great and some smokin' solos, etc.

Kansas is good stuff.
Wayward Son and Pile On are great sons
Dust in the wind was one of the first 'finger picking' chords I ever learned.
I loved hearing the two popular ones and never get sick of those two songs. The whole night I was jamming out and some of those songs were pretty long.

Even though they were not original members, they referenced the original guys many times throughout the night and you could tell it was like a big family.

Years ago, Kansas came to Chattanooga to play a gig and they didn't want to go on because of the rain. Bands normally have a clause in their contract that if they have their gear setup but get rained out, they still get paid. Chattanooga didn't play that game, they had to play to get paid. So they were pissed, but they came out. They didn't play a single hit, all they did was play new stuff. While it was awesome music, it wasn't Wayward Son or Dust In The Wind. We all stood out in the rain to watch them play new shit no one cared about.

Anyways, a few months later, Labor Day or Memorial Day came about and the local big time classic rock station was at the Guitar Center and their afternoon dj was there and I was going to play live on the air. He gave me the rundown and was like Hey! This is Scott Chase down at Guitar Center where they're having a big sale, and I'm going to play something for you guys! And he puts the mic down in front of the acoustic, so I played the intro to Stairway. Then he joked about how he'd been practicing then told everyone it was me and was like Matt, tell us what's going on down here today? So I gave him the 411 on the big sale, the financing, etc. Then he's like ok Matt, what else are you going to play for us? And I said I'm going to play Carry On Wayward Son, since Kansas couldn't be bothered to play it when they were here....I then proceeded to play it after throwing one of the biggest rock bands in history under the bus live on the air of the station that brought them here. Fuck Kansas.

Yeah killer band, for sure.

I highly recommend this follow up too - after Steve Walsh left Kansas he started Streets. Guitar player in that band was a ripper, albeit lots full processed 80’s sounds. Give this a spin:

What a great band! I liked them enough to be there early in their career and went to see them every time they came around in the 70's and 80's.

Rich Williams in the back always made me laugh at how awesome he played in a suit. Robbie, the viola player/singer was quite the performer, he loved the spotlight! Steve could carry the band. Kerry had that extra swagger that let you know he was the best guitarist in the stadium that night.

The one thing that sticks out in my memory was the short shorts that Rob and Steve wore. It was in style in tennis and the NBA, but,.....Rock & Roll? No

Kansas is killer, definitely some good tunes in their catalog.

Streets was great, Mike Slamer was the guitar player, he had a band in the 2000's called Seventh Key with Billy Greer, if you like streets give them a listen as well, great guitar playing on all those albums.

If I ever get around to visiting Texas, I'll be sure to bring my Les Paul so you can enjoy the goodness of the DiMarzio dubbel kreem Super Distortion/36th Anniversary PAF combo, and the Warrior with the gold cover 36th Anniversary PAF set so you can really take a deep dive into why DiMarzios are supreme lol

Another dimarzio is in my future based around looking at some of the pups you've mentioned. I just need to put some more gear cash together. My #1 needs fretwork first....

Balderdash! Just get a good soldering iron, a fret nipper, and a few fret tools and do your own fret jobs. While you're at it, put in super jumbo frets and a Floyd. It can only benefit your blues licks.

I saw Kansas free, back in the 90’s at the Taste of Colorado. (a 3-4 day street festival on steps of the Denver capitol building, at least 1M+ attendance). I also saw Charlie Daniel’s Band, some version of Jefferson sky service and The Brian Setzer orchestra.

Kansas is a prog band, in their heyday in the 70's and 80's very much prog. They are a big influence on Dream Theater and many others.
