Got tickets to go see The Circle (Sammy Hagar, Vic Johnson, Jason Bonham and Michael Anthony) at Fantasy Springs in Indio, CA on Saturday night.
Seems like the soundman had his stuff together as the sound was dialed in within 1-2 songs. That was a surprise, pleasantly. I met amp maker David Bray there. He makes amps for Vic Johnson, and Vic just put some Scumbacks in his cabs. David arranged for us to go backstage, meet the band, and shoot the breeze about gear, etc. There were quite a few people from the Fender Custom shop there, and a host of other people as well.
I have to say Vic Johnson is one of the nicest guys you'll meet. Very down to earth, personable, well spoken and he just seems like one of your friends right away. My wife got her picture taken with him, so her FB page is now updated with another rock star to add to her collection.
I have to say the Bray amp he uses does a ridiculously good EVH/brown sound tone. And Vic is a significantly under-rated guitarist. Considering he has to cover Zep, EVH, and all of Sammy Hagars discography in tone and playing, he does a marvelous job of getting the nuances, licks, etc. The one thing I didn't know before was that he's a great slide player, too. They did "When the Levee Breaks" and he has that song down, even used a double neck SG for it. Pretty stellar playing all in all.
Jason has all the Zep drums down pat, of course, and Michael Anthony does rip it up on bass pretty well, and of course his vocals/harmonies are spot on. Vic sings as well, so three part harmony songs are a cinch for this band. Sammy can still whip out some good licks on guitar even at 67 years old, so it was a great show.
If you get a chance to go see them, do it. You won't be disappointed at all.
