I've recently got a wild hair up my ass, and went and ordered all sort of pots, switches, etc, etc, because I want to try some different things/options with the tone of my pickups. The things I want to try aren't common at all, so I'm having a hard time finding any info at all of what will work, things other people have tried, etc, etc.

So does anybody know of any good sites that I could find some info on this stuff?

Thanks :)

JB!!

Just go to the dimarzio or Duncan site and check out there schems. they have everything under the sun!

I just rewired my guitar and it sounds MUCH better now and being that i am a complete newb, one thing that Ive learned is to pay attention to what direction you have the pickups installed because it will make a difference when you split them. In other words in my GM I had zebre pickups installed and I had them where one was reversed and when you split them, the tone is different because you are usin like coils instead of opposing ones. Had I know that I would have wired it differently.. Lesson learned!!

I could draw some. What do you want to do?
Well, I'm not exactly sure what I want to do yet. I guess I'm wondering if some of the the things I "want" to do are possible or not. Some info on how everything works with pots, caps, resistors, order of operation, etc would be cool.

For one, I NEVER use my tone control(s). I want to find some options of what I can do to install, for example, a 3 way on/on/on mini switch in place of the tone pot, and switch between 3 different ohm values to, for example, have 3 different sounds that are either darker or brighter. Sort of like (I believe this is what they're called), a Varitone.

-I'm also looking into different ways of using a 500k/250k concentric pot.
-EMG VMC
-Rothwell Cool Little Knob
-DMT (dual mode high/low pass tone control)
-How capacitors work in the circuit and options of how to wire them (series/parallel)
-Different ways of adding resistance with resistors in the circuit and options of how to wire them (series/parallel)

Stuff like that. :scared:

This is the site I use:
http://www.guitarelectronics.com/category/wiring_resources_guitar_wiring_diagrams/

It always seems to have pretty much everything. Just pick 1 pup, 2 pup, 3 pup, mods, etc. It's strange in that it heavily favors humbuckers in the diagrams, but you can pretty much infer the single coil from the humbucker diagram. That's for 1 and 2 pup. 3 pup, they finally introduce single coils.

I haven't messed with the mods at all. Only thing I remember not being able to find was a four-position switch diagram for a Tele. But like I said, it tends to favor humbuckers for 1 and 2 pup diagrams.

I've done so much resistor/cap/pot modding of my guitars that I'm sick of it, but if you can tell me what you want tonally from any modifications... i.e. what your guitar sounds like now vs. what you want it to sound like... I could hopefully recommend some simple and interesting modifications :D You can even wire diodes to a pot to add a "gain" knob to your guitar :inlove:

Yep, I've been on that site quite a bit, but there's nothing there (for free at least), that helps me out.

Sending you a PM

One cool tone that I have in one guitar is to do the two inside coils in series (instead of the traditional PRS parallel). Beefy tone! To do that, you do have to flip the magnet and possibly change the phase of the neck pickup...

On a side note (read hijak), what do you change if you want to darken up a tone pot - the way mine is setup right now, I think the neck pickup and splits are too bright...

Sorry the site was a dud. I thought you might have considered a TBX tone circuit. Since you want to work with changing the tone, and you want to think about using concentric pots. I've always thought it was a good idea, but I never tried it. It's not very popular. There might be a reason for that.

I currently have an active tone and boost setup for my Tele that has failed. I finally cut it out, and I play the thing with only 1 volume knob. It works so well that way that it's almost funny, considering all the fancy stuff I tried to do with it.

If you don't use your tones and your pickups are 4-conductor, here's an awesome little mod. The three way on-on-on mini switch can replace the tone pot, and you'll get series-split-parallel for each pickup. Really cool. The color code is for Duncan, you can just cross reference the colors for your pickups if they're different.
