I went to the MSG / Lynch Mob show last night and was struck by the contrasts in rigs and how they came across in the context of a live show.
Lynch had 3 stacks with 3 amp heads on each one, I'm not sure what was actually being used, most everything was powered up. Boutique gear, including some stuff that I've never heard of. He had a big pedalboard and a tech who was pushing buttons for him, handing him new guitars every couple of songs, lighting cigarettes for him, etc. Lynch's tone sounded great (fat punchy high gain Marshall tone) during the soundcheck and in between songs on it's own but was totally lost in the mix during songs. When the whole band was playing I couldn't really make out what he was doing. Moving around the venue didn't help much but getting closer to the stage helped a little. It was a boring show but then again I haven't been a fan since Dokken really.
Schenker had 2 Marshall stacks of which one was a backup. They were those channel switching JCM800 heads. He had a cobbled-together pedalboard with a few Boss pedals and a camo wah. He never changed guitars once during the whole show. His tone sounded absolutely killer. Sat perfectly in the mix. A little bit higher gain that what I've heard out of him in the past but similar to the MSG recordings. He has some personal problems evidently but it isn't affecting his playing these days it seems. He was on fire. I highly recommend checking this show out if it comes near you.
