Got a wah on craigslist. Been playing 23 years, never used one before lmao.

I LOVE it. Now I am interested in Wah pedals but even moreso fixed wahs as I prefer a set and forget to manipulating the pedal.

In my research I see wahs are simple as hell.

I prefer the red fasel thus far to the standard crybaby. Interesed in whipple and others.

Some remove the input buffer. I use a buffer first in my chain should I go bufferless?

As for fixed wahs, ive considered rehousing. Most have two wah circuits, i think id only use one.

Tips? Advice?

I cant see myself spending more than $150 based on what a wah is.

Ill build before i spend $300 on some guys garage craft beer habit.

I use lots of gain. The fasel was vocal and sung to me, the regular crybaby seems muddy and honky in comparison.

I have the Dimebag and the Crybaby 535 which in my opinion are the best and most versatile. the tone shaping and sweep shaping of those is crucial to me and they both have a solo boost which adds some nice juice when you go for the wah during a solo. just makes it scream.
i don't know anything about a fixed wah, and would never want that.

I had a dimebag once. A gift. Sold it immediately, ill look at it again.

As for fixed wah, different strokes i get it, fixed IS unorthodox.

as an example Id be going for a michael amott of arch enemy sweet spot.

Played any boutique wahs ever? All snake oil?

I have 3 wahs right now. Steve Vai Bad Horsie, George Lynch Dragon II and a Gig FX Mega Wah (Peter Frampton Signature). I never really liked the cry baby just because I don't like the foot switch. My favorite right now is the Mega Wah and it has a fixed wah feature as well but the Dragon II has the fixed feature like you are talking about too. The Gig FX comes in a stereo version too but I have the mono version.

Sweet ill check them out thanks!

My two favorites are the Jerry Cantrell Wah and the Dunlop CAE Wah.

Both can be had for under $150

I got the John Petrucci Cry Baby Wah... its pretty cool and kind of different than your normal Hendrix-ish style of wah... has lots of pots inside the wah to adjust for even more types of tones and stuff.

I love the Cry Baby Rack Wah (Dunlop DCR 2SR), which probably is a bit overkill. Dunlop is selling a Petrucci Signature Wah now, which has basicly the same features as the rack Wah (adjustable Q, 6 Band EQ, Volume), but a much better price. More than 150 though.
I never had the Jerry Cantrell Wah and the Dunlop CAE Wah, but I heard that they are very good and in your price range!

Cool thanks for that, Amott actually used that rack way for a while, didn't know the petrucci was similar.

If lots of gain and lots of live gigs go for Dunlop Crybaby 95Q! Simple, classic, no switch button, built like a tank. I've had a dozen of wahs, I still have 4-5 models for different studio applications, but none of them beats the 95Q on stage! FACT!

FWIW, the true bypass/non-buffered wah pedals I've used (all RMCs) are sensitive to placement on your pedalboard. I couldn't put them near my EH DMM or my Sweetsound UltraVibe (both of which have regular 120v power cords) or I would get hum.

I have the Area 51, and my friend a Vox Handwired; both are very nice wah, for a italian vocal sound. Can do Hendrix, Satriani, Hammet...

Can't set it fixed. Won't work for me.

Ill check those other ones out thanks guys!

for me, the 535Q was probably the best and most versatile, but it's easy to get confused and screw up the settings
I finally ended up with the Cantrell signature, which sounds like a really well tuned and set up 535Q, so I don't have to worry about anything
I also had the classic GCB95 and the Hendrix models, which were fine
I love the Vox voicing too, but they work better for the old stuff
I absolutely hate the whole Morley sound, concept and design

I had to sell one of my hardwired EHX DMMs for the same reason - annoying hum. Didn't matter what I stuck next to it, it would buzz likely crazy. Wasn't terribly loud, but enough for me to notice. I still have my DMM which runs on external power. No issues with it, and it's one of my favorite delay pedals.

Fulltone Clyde Deluxe... Bitchin!

This. I have my old late 90s white Clyde Standard and '02-ish Clyde Deluxe I regularly abuse.

Dunlop Crybaby Mini.

Usually use the Crybaby model in my digital modelers too; just sounds like a wah should to me. YMMV.

Just ordered Source Audio Stingray (multi-filter) this morning from Prymaxe. I've been looking for a filter pedal for awhile and the Stingray stayed at the top of my list...it does envelop filtering/following/auto wah and more...the other side of wah.
