Just received 2 scumback speakers metal handles for my 1960 cab... They look good, however I'm kind of pissed off about the purchase.. First of all, the two center bolts dont line up at ALL with the stock hole pattern for whatever reason (the outer 4 do). Second, was kind of pissed realizing the screws that came with the kit for the extra $6 or whatever arent even painted black or gold to match the hardware on the rest of the cab.. So, I had to spray paint them black which isn't a HUGE problem but kind of ridiculous for the $$$ these handles cost. Third, I nearly stripped 2 of the screws putting the handles in (and I was very careful to NOT strip them) and IDK if it's some cheap quality screw or what! I should mention, the screw kit did come with 1 extra but I'd rather it just came with better screws to begin with.

Now that they are installed... I think they look pretty good, but if I didn't paint the screws black it would have looked out of place on the cabinet. There is a slight bend in the metal where it meets the cabinet because the screw holes didnt line up but I drilled them out in line the best I could.. So, it kind of "arcs" away from the cabinet between hole locations but whatever. Kind of disappointed overall with a $75+ price tag plus a pain in the ass to install them when they are advertised as "DROP IN" replacements. This cabinet is a 1980's cab, so I dont see why this was such an issue..

SO in short, if you happen to purchase this kit I would suggest drilling/screwing the outer 4 screws first and installing them with the plate --> marking where the center 2 holes line up --> redrill the new holes for the center 2 and install the center 2 last.

Thanks for the heads up. I got a buddy with a Marshall cab that survived a jam spot fire. He needs new handles. It's nice to know they make metal replacements, but sucks there is trouble with them. Let's hope they can resolve the issues by the time he gets some.

These were the only ones I could find that were supposedly "drop in replacements"

most of the others have 8 screw holes

These may be drop-in replacements for cabs that actually came with metal handles in the first place. The plastic ones were different. If I'm not mistaken, those original Marshall cabs that came with the metal handles also had chrome screws and not black.

You are not mistaken. The originals didn't have black screws.

Yea my Marshall 1960A is from 2004 I think and I was looking at the Mojo ones, I'm wondering if the Mojo ones will fit mine without any drilling or routing?? The scumback ones are waay too expensive!

Actually I think you're correct. The Mojo and Avatar ones come with 8 screws/holes.

...hmmm I need to find me a woman like that.

I'm surprised Jim didn't talk with you about this when you contacted him to discuss it. He has always been over the top taking care of me. Sending me expensive speakers before I paid him, things like that. I'm really surprised he blew you off like that. In that case I would publically post on a forum how unhappy I was about also. He deserves to have his business and livelihood talked about negatively if he is just going to ignore you.

Kyle, I would have happily sent you another pair of handles if there was an issue I was made aware. However, now that you have them installed, it's too late for that. I've sold about 200 metal handle kits out of the original 350 that I had made. In all of those sales not one client has had to redrill their existing mounting holes because they were off center, or misaligned. You are the first, and only one.

The metal handles do not come with screws that match every Marshall cab. To do that I would need to supply nickel, gold, black, silver, chrome and potentially other colors. Since the original 60's era metal handles came with screws the same color as what I shipped, that's what I ship. If you had inquired about that before purchasing I would have told you to find your own screws. I didn't realize you needed a special color screw.

The screws I supply are 10/32 x 3/4" threads with the long barrel T-nuts that are easier to thread. The long barrel also allows for a more secure fit since there are more threads to tighten with. I'm not sure how you misthreaded two of them out of the ones I sent, but OK, you did it.

I'm not sure what else went wrong with your installation, but there are are Marshall cabs that were sent out from the factory with incorrect handle cutouts in the wood that require trimming occasionally. That's happened four times out of 200 handle kits sent out, and I'd imagine there could be other handle anomalies as well. But I've never seen the Marshall made full size plastic handles have a bolt hole pattern deviation before, and neither have the 200 clients before you.

I'm sorry, but you had a very strange/singular issue, and I would have appreciated a call or email try to help first. So your situation/installation was truly unique based on the experiences I've had and the 200 clients that got these before. Some of them comment over on this TGP thread.

To clarify: I have been contacted throughout the purchase from scumback speakers and he has been helpful. However, this situation seemed to have been 1 in a few hundred. So if you happen to run into this issue, I advise you to drill the 4 outer holes first, and worry about the inner two last once everything else is in place. The handle is built really well, just seems like my cabinet was a bit off from the bunch.

I didnt bother contacting him when I discovered the problem because I doubted it was an issue with the handle. I figured because they were mass produced metal handles charged $70+, that they were all identical. And I was right. So, there really isn't much more he could have done other than refunding me my money and sending the handle back. But I had to make it work, my old handles were falling apart and broken, I needed a solution.
