SD Blackouts-gnd issue or defective pickup ? (Dead battery.)

Hey guys, acquired a guitar with SD AHB-1s, formally had EMGs in according to stock spec for that model.

It works perfectly on Bridge pickup but the Neck has a noticeable hiss....

I'm assuming they don't require a ground but what are chances this is wired incorrectly versus simply being defective?

grounding issues typically present themselves as a hum not so much as a hiss

Yeah..am just going to go with dead battery for now....it was showing 7-8V but by guess is it's just dying under load....new battery and hiss is goners.
