Found a B52 ST6012, 60 watt 2x12 w/V30's stock.
Couldn't pass it up for $160.
Figured the low cost gives me more money to experiment.

It has stock 5881's, Chinese probably.

I decided to try new power tubes, and wanted something really nice.
Did a bunch of reading and "winged C's" sounded like a great choice.
$90 for 2 tubes, and I bought the amp for $160. :D
Some may call that silly, but the amp is still 100% tube and I only need it for playing at home.

Wow, wow, and wow! I'm amazed at how much difference in tone these tubes make.
The odd hum went away as well as the occasional quiet 'pop - tink' noise.
But the best difference is the TONE. Everything I've read about these tubes is true.
Sweet cream and harmonics galore, all with a beautiful clarity.
They made this simple amp sound much better than what it could do before.

Now that these tubes give a sweet clear tone, I can hear some things I don't like about the EH pre tubes.
Clean channel everything sounds sweet and full. The high gain channels are a bit fizzy though, especially on the higher frequencies/treble.
So I need to find something to tame that.

I'm thinking to go with Tung-Sol pre's or the "Preferred" pre's from the tubestore.
I'd appreciate some experiences and advice on these tubes, or other pre's that you think will work.
The issues I have now with the electro-harmonix pre's is the high gain channel. It's a bit "fizzy" in tone.
I'd like a quieter tube, but also something with more gain, and of course TONE.
TIA. :)

Tung Sols can be bright in some preamp circuits. They can also be susceptible to burnout pretty quick.

6550 power tubes are the biz.

Good preamp glass? The preferred series are just hand-picked Chinese/Shugaung preamp tubes. Go with high grade Chinese/Shuggies, and depending on the type of amp, shove a LPS in the PI slot and Bob's yer uncle.

Ya know, I cant explain it, but everytime I put in =C= tubes, that amp sounds great

What/which Chinese/Shuggies?

What about JJ's pre's?

JJ pres are muddy and fizzy. You want Chinese 12AX7AC5. HG for sensitive positions. HG+ for V1.

i need to try some SED tubes in my Recto, and see how they go. i have Mesa EL34s in it now. and im sure the SEDs are probably better, maybe a little less harsh. however, how old were the tubes in your amp? may have needed a new set and any would probably have been an improvement over what was in there!

You may have bias issues as you cant bias Mesa's.

Laura @ Valve Queen may be Ur best bet.

Mesa branded tubes are picked for their amps because the fall into certain bias ranges.

Because your amp doesnt have a bias pot you may have issues, know whatt-i mean Vern.

which is why you pick a tube retailer who can match Mesa specs...hur dee dur. i like how you assumed that i didnt know my Mesa was fixed bias and that i would need to get tubes in spec for that.

You'd be surprised in 2013' who doesnt even know what a bias is.

Trying to be helpful, no need for condescension ... take what you want and leave the rest.

Then don't assume that someone doesn't know anything about their equipment. Give respect and get it.
