ive heard they improved the clean on the 50W compared to the 100W. they also added a resonance knob on the 50W version on the back to bring back some low end on low volume playing. Does not take cranking it much to give up the chewy goods for lead playing too.

they also sound great with V30's. i would actually get a 2x12 loaded with some low wattage greenbacks though. a 50W 5150 into a pair of 25W original greenbacks would sound killer!

I do love the sound of Greenbacks. I have always thought that the dynamic response was way cleaner and quicker than V30's. I'll definitely have to give the 5150's another look if you think the clean channel has improved. Are you talking about the EVH 5150iii's? I haven't played the EVH versions. The one I played was a Peavey and was pretty old.

the 5150 III yes, not the 6505 or 6505+. I believe you were talking about the original 5150/6505 which everyone knows they have cleans that are sub-par. Generally those original ones are accepted as working mans cleans - they only work great after you slap copious amounts of chorus and reverb on them

I definitely recommend you give the 5150 III 50W a try, i think that might be the best mix of price, cover classic rock, thrash, and core genres. How well it does rock or down-tuned would depend on your choice of speakers with it, which would make it quite versatile. Not as much as the roadking II or roadster, but those are quite a step up in the price bracket

Yeah no problem, i am sure alot of people will be stepping in before too long to help out - tricky to recommend anything since oranges do not get alot of love around here, that kinda threw me at a tangent trying to make suggestions that would fit that type of tonal preference :)

Since the marshall thing is not your style and the roadking II is a possible option on the used market, have you considered a 5150 III 100W or 50W? i do not own a 50W, have played the 100W multiple times, but i do hear the 50W can handle drop tuning great, and the clean channel is excellent. Price is great too - about twice as cheap new as a used roadking II.

I have definitely considered the 5150. That was a lead contender for a while until I heard its clean channel. I've only heard and played on one and it was a 100watt. That was the worst clean sound EVER! It could've been the head but Jesus Christ it was bad! I stood in shock for a while. Would you consider the head or the combo with a change of speakers?

I think what they did on the EVH 5153 50 watt is give it more headroom on the gain knob before breakup. on the 100 watt its pretty easy to get channel one into some breakup. they needed to do that on the 50 watt since it shares the same gain as channel 2

here is a video I did of the 100 watt EVH 5150 III head. you will hear some cleans in the middle. I think they are quite usable..

  Just checking about the version of the 5150. I figured you were talking about the 5150iii but you never know till you ask! I took a look and the 2x12 cabs are loaded with the Celestion G12H 30W Anniversary Speakers. I'm not sure if I've heard that particular model before but I have heard the Greenbacks and dug them so I'm assuming that these would be as good, if not better, than the ones I heard. How are they on drop tunings? I never tune below drop Db so I don't want a surprise when someone comes in with a drop A

Great vid man! The clean tone is ridiculously better than the one I played! Is that the matching cabinet with it?

no its a different cab. From what I hear, the EVH cabs really are a great match for this amp. Its a killer amp that can do quite a bit imo. def a good amp.

Really? I was under the impression that H&K amps aren't worth the money until you reached the higher end models.

If this thread is dead I shall let it die in peace. Thanks to everyone that participated and gave suggestions! I learned a lot about different amps as a result of this so whatever I do end up getting I will go in with knowledge that I didn't have beforehand. Be sure to keep this thread in the back of your mind though. Whatever I end up with I will be sure to upload a variety of sound clips so that all of you can judge for yourselves.

Yeah man keep us posted what you went with. Best to go try out amps yourself but know that not always possible.

Definitely! I've been tone chasing for over a decade and I have loved every minute of it! Part of the reason I started this tread is to not only learn about different amps but also figure out how far I am going to have to drive to try them all out :D For the most part, at least half of ten I'll be able to find somewhere close. Others I might order and rely on a return policy.

Thanks again for all of the help everyone!

Then your named a 'flipper'....
