I have a new 6505 that I'm playing through an orange 2x12 w/V30s. I have a Boss NS-2, an Ibanez TS-9 and a Boss CS-3 at my disposal.

What would you all recommend as far as settings go? I'm looking to play some heavy stuff. I tune down 1 whole step. I like the tone of Necrophagist, The Black Dahlia Murder... And I'm kinda digging Battlecross.

Basically I want a high gain tone that'll still sound good in a mix. I'm not into super bassy gains. More like punchy tight tones with clarity.

Gain, bass, and treble dimed. Mids zero.

Just kidding. I think that amp has 2 inputs, high and low. I like to use the low input, the amp has plenty of gain and it takes some upper fizz out. EQ is about taste, so I would say start at noon and dial from there.

 pre-3-4.5 Can't set the gain high, plenty of usable gain between setting the amp gain between 3-5.
low- 7.5 ns-2 and cs-3 in the effects loop
mid-3 TS-9 in front of the amp ,crank the level, tone about 1/4-half turn, over drive all the way off. This will tighten up the lows a bit and give you tighter gain structure
high-6 Setting the noise gate in the effects loop will keep things quite and clean things up a bit
pre-8 the cs-3 will sound cleaner in the effects loop on both channels
post-4
resonance-7-8 presence 5-8

Yeah, I've been using the boost in front and keeping the gain at about 2.5-3. I've been plugging everything in front actually. My chain goes:

Guitar-NS-2-CS-3-TS9-6505.

I did some research and apparently that's one suggested method. I just want a nice smooth tight tone.

I'll try that. Hopefully that'll get rid of this ice-pick like sizzle I'm getting.

first ditch the TS-9....Lead chan, gain 6.5 - bass 6 - mids 4 - treble 6 - res 6 - pres 6

I got the ts9 because I was getting some looseness from the low end. Some flub or whatever.

I tried the settings the last guy posted and I'm liking them.

i never needed a boost with my 5150...its all in the settings. gain below 5 (i usually never went above 4 and thats still seriously saturated IMO), bass 10, mids anywhere from 4-7, treble 5-6. if youre getting really woofy lows, lower the resonance, it will tighten the response up a little. and to me the presence never works until about 7, and i usually kept it at 8. seemed like that was the point where if you rolled back a little the high end was too soft, but over that it was ear-screeching.

i use EMGs too, so maybe running the bass at 10 wouldnt work for you...but i usually just controlled the low end punch with the resonance control, never usually above 4 for me.

I gigged with a 5150 for years!! Treble and bass at 3 o'clock. Mid at 9 o'clock. Resonance and presence at 9 out of ten (out of ten). Gain around 7 (out of ten). Noise suppressor around 9 o'clock. Hope that helps! It'll sound effin' killer!!

with my 5150 I used the 6 6 6 method and did not use the lead channel. Crunch channel with the pre at 2 o'clock bass, mid and treble all at 6. Post at whatever is bearable. Presence at 12 o'clock and resonance at 3 o'clock. Rock it hard

if you have a boss ns2, you can use it like this:

put it on top of the amp.

guitar/cable/ns2 input

send to amp input

effects send to ns2return
ns2 output to power amp in(or the effects return)

that way, you're gating both the front and the power section of the amp.

Fuck around with it until it sounds good to you. May change when you get into a rehearsal situation.

Start at noon and use the res sparingly. Also if you use the TS9, get off the lead ch and use the rhythm ch on crunch mode. MONEY!

Ive owned a 5150/6505 about 6 different times and Im always amazed at how high most people run the treble on those amps. Once I got the treble past 10 o clock , it was unbearable for me. They are great sounding amps and record amazingly , but they will cut your head off real quick with their high end.

Yep. I used to dial my 6505 with bass at 1:00, mids at noon, treble at 11:00. Complete reverse of most of my amp setups.

Man, ive played these amps from about 93. Both 5150/5150 II and 65's and it always the same. This time around im using the evh 4x12 so the mids increased a bit. The peavey cab is where a lot of that buzzy comes from (imho)
Bass 6.5 mids 3.5 treb 6.5 maybe cause i keep the presence just past 5 they are killer amps..amazing through a evh cab too..my fav so far

Ive never tried the EVH cab , but Ive used Orange cabs , Marshalls ( with 75s ) and one with GBs and I couldnt get the treble even close to 6.5 . 10 o clock was max for me . Not to mention , I always run the presence off on my amps . Ive yet to find an amp that sounds better to my ears with the presence knob anywhere but off
