I'm looking at getting s Seven string. I'm looking at the RG7420 and the Ibanez Iron Label. The basic difference would be the pickups. If I went with the 7420, I would be putting in a set of Duncan Distortions. (Ola style...lol) I would think that with the ability to swap pickups on the 7420, it would allow me to tailor the guitar for the tones I want. However, I am not up on the EMG 707s- so I don't really know what other EMGs they would compare to. Which one would you guys recommend, and why. Thanks!

Cool thing is that Seymour Duncan are releasing passive pickups in Active housings. So you don't have to worry about the looks if you get the one with the EMGs!

707 is based on the 85. Personally I love them and for passives the Lundgren M7 (but have a feeling you are going to get a wave of BKP and DiMarzio recommendations regardless though it sounds like you've honed in on potential choices). I like the no inlays look of the top guitar, if playability is comparable, that would be my personal pick.

That's cool. I'm kinda leaning toward the the 7420, as I believe that it has a five way switch. Duncan is going to release your pickups in a 7 string version. right?

I don't have any pickups :D I just play duncan distortions. But the passive in active housing option will be for 6,7 and 8 strings

As much as I like my EMG's, I would recommend the passive route (7420). Passives breath so much more than EMG's.

My bad, I thought the Black Winter pups were going to be your sig ones.

Do you have much experience playing 7's?

If not, I'll go ahead and be that guy that recommends you get a baritone 6 instead.

I've owned a 7 and an 8 in the past but eventually realized they just ain't for me and sold them and ended up with a 6-string Ibanez RGD. Much happier now!

I've played sevens in the past. Its been about 10 years though. I've played a few baritones, and just didn't care for them.

7s are good.
8s are too much.
6s are just dandy.

I loathe EMGs.

Have a nice day.

EMGs sound familiar, but dated and a bit hash on the hi end...+ forget about making different tonal changes with your guitar volume- a clear weakness for EMG

My vote is clearly passive

6 is cool
7 is awesome
8 is brutal

There are some new Duncan 7 string passive pickups coming out very soon. I currently have the prototypes for the Nazgul and the Pegasus. The Pegasus is designed for progressive/techy stuff and the Nazgul is an all out punisher. I am as I type this working on a demo of the Nazgul. I will be doing a Pegasus soon after. As far as I know these will also be available in soapbar housings.

If it were me I'd go with the 7420. Especially if it has the 5 way switch.

I would buy a Nazgul even if it sounded like turds just because of the name. How would it sound in a LP style guitar? I have been talking to MJ about custom winfing a Custom for me in a P90 sized bucker but ma hold off until the new pick ups are out.

707's are good. They're not grating like an 81. 707TW-X's are the shit. The X series are definitely more open like a passive, but still butt quiet and everything else good active.

I totally dig the plain fretboard. I think dots just look cheap. Besides, you can't even see them when you play. All you need are side markers.

You might check out the Trems also. I am not sure if one is better than the other.

I have a RG7321 that I love. Nice playing guitars. I also have a Schecter with the 707's. Both are good options, just depends on what you are looking for...

See, I love the look of the Iron Label. Just looked at the spec for both guitars. Same trem. Both have a 3-way switch (boo!). I'll probably end up with the 7420 because it's cheaper...lol

My preliminary thoughts are that it would sound great in an LP style guitar. I have it installed in my Anderson Drop Top 7 and it really compliments it. Even though that is a different style of guitar than a LP, I could see it working there as well. It reminds me a lot of a ceramic Warpig by BKP but with nicer mid content. Not sure if a 6 string version is in the works though.

Cool. Thanks. I am guessing since I have to go custom shop anyway from Duncan, they may accommodate a 6 string version. $175 a whack base price though.

I try not to let pickups decide which guitars I buy because one way or another you can always change them.

I think the Iron Label is a better guitar. I've hated 90% of the Ibanez 7's I've played under $1k but the Iron Label's are pretty solid for the price. I've been playing around with them regularly at work.

Could also be personal preference, but I think the Iron Label's have a really nice neck contour. You're at least getting pickups you can resell if/when you swap them out, w/the EMG's. Not a big fan of EMGs most of the time, but really can't stand Ibanez pickups. And the 707 is one of my fav EMGs.
