I don't post here much, personally i cant stand the entire hair band era, (well except for the big haired stiletto heeled, mini skirt wearing bithches part)...the reason I come here is because there are a lot of dudes my age and there's some here that have some seriously awesome tone,..sah5150 & physco dave off the top of my head,...physco dave has some of the best timing I have heard,...that video where he's jamming on a Cameron and his cat comes in,..he stops,..pats his cat,...then starts jamming again,...if you keep track of his timing,..after he stops patting the cat,..he picks up right in time! amazing!...it's one of my many weaknesses..and I thought I had good timing,..then when ya start recording,..you pick up on such things,...that and all you hear is the mistakes,..that no one else but you hear,... from 1985 to 1988 I was the guitarist in a black Sabbath cover band named earth, so when you hair banders were jamming in leotards we were sweating our balls off in full black leather!! ...the thing about cover bands is you get instant bookings and fans,...but you also get pigeon holed and it's impossible to break out of,...I rember we tried to slip some original material in,...bad-bad idea!! so we decided to have an alias band called X,.. even then because at the time the metal scene was huge, people would catch on and start yelling Sabbath-Sabbath-sabbath...we played all through out New England with mass having the most active metal scene,..every place would be packed,..and being as nieve as I was then,..i thought I would be that way forever,...your friends in other bands would talk about how there was a record company agent in town to see such & such,..some bands would get some moderate success,..some even made it on the head bangers ball,...but that was about it,...so we all dove in on all the access that we thought were mandatory to be in rock and roll band...there were club owners who would show up back stage with some coke,..especially if the place was packed,...there were always hangers on,.. more than willing to supply just about anything just to be around ya,...and let us not forget the women,...my favorite part of the era,...so all and all,...we drank like fish,...did as many drugs as anyone would give us,..and took advantage of the bitches!...hell this was rock n roll after all,...also at this time I was attending a tech school for hvac mech,.. funny thing back then,..you actually made money!! ha!...in 1988 after graduating from the tech school with a degree, it was my day job,..but I still had delusions of grandure about making it big,..we talked about moving to LA,.. blah blah blah,..in the fall of 1988 I was working on the roof of a mall, we were putting a new heat exchanger in a unit,...as we were pulling it up with a rope it got caught on the flashing of the roof,..i grabbed the heat exchanger with my right hand and gave a big yank,...heat exchanger comes up,..and I instantly new I did something to my hand,...I opened up my right hand to see I had a very deep cut on my right index finger,..funny thing,..it didn't bleed for at least 10 seconds or so,..then I tried to close my hand,...my right index finger didn't work./ I had severed the tendon right at the first knuckle,...the guy I was working with,...looked at it,..he had to go sit down before he passed out,..so I had to drive myself to the ER,..well the surgery was done...then I was told that if I work really hard in re-hab I may get 70% of the use of that finger back,..i also had nerve damage and couldn't feel anything in that finger,..it always feels like I slept on it all night,..
(ya know when ya wake up,..your arm is all tingly,..but it wont work,..so you take your other hand and shake the tingly dead arm back to life)
well I couldn't hold a pick using my right index finger,..so I tried using my right middle finger,..that didn't work out so good,..since I couldn't feel my right index finger,..it always got in the way,..hitting and muting or plucking the strings,..i even tried to tape my index and middle finger together,..thou better,..still had the same issue,..i gave up on playing guitar,..sold all my equipment,..decided I was gonna be a bass player,..still had the same problems,..that and my heart just wasn't into it,...gave up on being a musician,..about 7 years later,..through just normal every day use I regained about 90% use of the right index finger,..i bought a cheap dean guitar and a peavey amp,...but because I couldn't "feel" the pic,..sometimes the pic would just fly out of my fingers, so I just played every now and then with my cheap dean and peavey,....then I found these pics with a hole cut in the middle,..more like a 8-sided star than a round hole,..the name of these pics escape me at the moment,..but for the first time in close to 10 years I was able to play,..i could only play for about 15 minutes at a time because I would be squeezing the pic so hard trying not to let it slip through my fingers that my thumb and index finger would fatigue very easily,..and also temperature played a huge role as well,..as in,..when it's cold, my index finger stiffens up...I don't even bother trying to play,..i have never been in another band,..or even jammed with anyone since,..but at least I can play,..i just got out of the hospital yesterday,..i have pancreitus ,..all kinds of spots on my liver,...from all the vodka,.....but what the hell,...I really don't think I would change anything except the severed tendon part that is,...maybe some of you have some story's of back in the day you wouldn't mind sharing,...
